Hakushu 12y, 43.5%

Nose:
Fresh cut hay

Palate: Again fresh hay, but with a disappointingly short finish and the flavours were quite weak.

Overall Impression: Quite disappointing.

N: sweet, with a nice wisp of smoke and lots of fruit too.

P: The smoke is there and it's quite fruity and honeyed too (shades of Highland Park 12?). Very smooth and very slightly oily.

F: A nice contrasting sharpness in the finish, whch is long. Honey there too though.

This is very nice. I would buy again.

Hi Malty,

I'm quite surprised at your notes for the Hakushu 12 - apart from being slightly expensive for a 12yo, I found the whisky to be really full flavoured with delightful sweet-peat coursing through it (not heavy, more scented).

Perhaps you need another sample?

Hakushu 12 43%

Nose: Very fresh and clean as a whistle. Seems to be untainted by any wood influence at all. Banana, vanilla custard, lychee, soap flakes, peat. Invigorating.

Palate: Pepper as if it's straight from the shaker into the malt. Earthy peat, banana over oats, toffee, some orange and lemon.

Finish: Is medium length, dominated by peppery spice, and underpinned by clean malt and lingering earthy peat.

Very well crafted. A good one for displaying the difference between the taste of peat and smoke.
