It would be great for Irish whiskey. That sector needs more distinct whiskies.

Hi there,

Could Tullamore Dew be distilled again in Offaly?

Always good news when it's about a new distillery opening (or possibility of). I'm embarrassed to say, I've never tried any Tullamore Dew...is it any good? I see it on the shelves but for some reason, always pass it by. I think it's that dorky ceramic bottle that turns me off their product line.

Just read this on their website: William Grant & Sons, the owners of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey would like to announce that the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre will close on Wednesday, 30th November to prepare for its redevelopment next year. We have exciting plans to create a top class centre where visitors from around the world can truly engage with Tullamore Dew. The new visitor centre is expected to open during the 2012 summer tourist season and is ultimately expected to attract up to 40,000 visitors annually.

It's okay, the standard stuff. I think the 12 year old is quite nice, if you like this style of whiskey. The standard Tullamore Dew is a little raw. It's nearly all made in Midleton.

They also have a single malt now, made at Cooley. It is fine. I think it will get better.

The old stuff made in Tullamore at Daly's distillery is great, but very rate and expensive.

I agree with Aidan that the standard Tullamore Dew is a little raw... which is why we here, pour it into coffee, sugar and whipped cream on top... :yummy:

...I guess I should give the 12 yo a try. I usually pour Bushmills in my Irish Coffee and when I make my from-scratch/full fat version of "Baileys Irish Cream"- good for brunch. Instead of cookies, we give our neighbors bottles of our homemade "Baileys" for X-mas - yes, it's popular. :P

My favourite for Irish coffee is one of my favourite whiskeys, Powers. It's a bit spicier. I think most pubs in Ireland use either Powers or Tullamore.

I know nobody here is interested in Irish whiskey, really, but here's a drawing of the proposed distillery...

Sorry Steffen. For your guide, then, there's going to be seven distilleries in Ireland soon, maybe more.

I hear what you are saying John, but most of the Irish Whiskey community are (reasonably) engaged in the IWS forum, so Irish news isn't raised here often enough. Probably if it wasn't for you and Adrian it would get no attention at all. That doesn't mean we're not interested, just that it's off the radar of most folk around here. Personally I am delighted at the prospect of more Irish distilleries and more single malts and (hopefully) pps. It's diversity that creates interest and discussion and it sounds like there's going to be a lot more to get interested in.

Nice picture by the way.
