Hmmm

Normally I don't care much what people do with their whiskies, and I do think that different whiskies can make a difference in cocktails

I do think that making cocktails will take the finer edges of a whisky and you can always downgrade your whisky for a cocktail

To me this just extravagant behaviour that some rich people (people with more money than brains) like to do to show off just because they can. And to get some attention. I think it will be hard to find anyone here with a choice of the Mortlach neat and this cocktail. Even thou we have excentrics here like Mr. Tattie Heid :-)

Matter of fact I can only think of people involved in a project like this as morons, but thats just my personal opinion :-)

This was probably done more for the provocation, and to cause a stirup, and I can't help blowing a little sigh and shake my head. I must be getting old.

Steffen

PS I'd lip it thou

I think putting malt whisky into a cocktail is a bit of a waste of whisky and this just seems insane. Still, it takes all sorts ...

I was just agreeing with Nick and Steffen. Maybe we should form a lack of appreciation society.

I think Mortlach 70 in a cocktail is such a waste. Why not just mix it with half a tin of irn bru for a truly authentic Scotch experience

Well, let's face it, most of the Mortlach 70 that actually gets drunk will be wasted anyway, going down the gullet of some rich bozo who will exclaim, "Wow, that's really smooooth." (Not to mention the cronies or business associates he's trying to impress.) And just to be fair, it would be wasted if I drank it, too.

Definitely.

Also I don't think single malts in a cocktail are inherently a bad thing, but I certainly wouldn't be going too far above the cheapest expression from a given distillery without good reason.

Only Springbank and the occasional Arran G.
Being a generous sort of person, I'd take your share of the Springer though - for a small consideration :)

I was standing at the bar while they made it (and videoed it, although that disappeared in a puff of SD card dying annoyance) and it's definitely done as a provocation - if you've met the Simply Whisky guys then you'll know how true that is. They wanted to get a big crowd along and sticking a 'cocktail made with the world's oldest whisky' certainly helped pack in a few more bodies.

Making a cocktail with it was vaguely annoying, although it was their sample (teeny tiny as it was) and up to them what they wanted to do with it (they won it, afair). However, they stuck Talisker in the cocktail along with it, meaning that there wasn't much of a chance of tasting the Mortlach anyway, making it a proper waste. Ho hum.

It was a good night though - the promise of whisky cocktails (ignoring the last one) pulled a lot of people who don't normally drink whisky out of the woodwork and while the whisky was free the cocktails weren't, meaning that a chunk of the crowd stayed on the whisky all night. And the cocktails weren't bad either...

In related news, Colin Dunn should be forbidden from using a megaphone in an enclosed space.

Maybe its good that people will actually drink this whisky rather then, bought, stored, and sold 10 years later.

Oh, no doubt there will be more of that than of the cocktail-guzzling and indiscriminate dramming. And that's okay, too, as far as I'm concerned...it means there will actually be some of it around in ten years. Just think of it as spreading out the market in time.
