2009 Autumn Release 46% - Kilchoman

Postby brendram » 16 Jan 2010, 21:02

This is my first attempt at a review, so please bear with me...
The box states it has been matured for 3 years on fresh bourbon barrels, finished for 3 months in oloroso sherry butts and one 3 year old refill bourbon barrel was added to the vatting.

Colour: amber

Legs: Thick, viscous

Nose: initial charcoal, peat, smoke, then some citrus, leather and hey

Palate: peat, smoke, oranges, some farmy notes. The sherry influence is very subdued.

Finish: Long and drying with the peat and smoke continuing and some medicinal notes coming late to the party.

Final thoughts: I haven't had such a young whisky before, but I have had my share of Islay whiskys. The Kilchoman isn't terribly complex (as to be expected), but it does bode well for the future. I will certainly come back for a more aged product.

Edit: just some spällink ant stuph

This was a very good review I feel.

This Autumn release was far more pleasing to my palate at least (in comparison to the Inaugural Release) and I rate it very, very highly indeed, considering its young age.

Kilchoman Autumn 2009 release 46%

Nose: Very nice. Some real complexity here and less of the signs of youth seen in the inaugural release. Still clearly young, but real development of iodine and sticking plasters with the backdrop of a peat fire.
Palate: The youth is more evident here. Still lots of smoke but there nice malty sweetness too.
Finish: Not a huge finish, but there's a lovely freshness that balances the heat and smoke.
Comment: Every time I try Kilchoman I enjoy it. Its still early days but I just feel that its going to be a fantastic malt once it reaches a decent age, say 8-10. It's really drinkable already.
