Murray McDavid's 'Mission Gold' series. One of 1,800 bottles.

Nose: Fairly obvious cognac notes initially. Fruity - lemon, orange - and a hint of cocoa powder. A faint hint of peat and possibly coconut (think Malibu, piña colada etc). A grassy background. Fairly buttery.

Palate: Fruity. Quite a bit of cognac again, a little peat and... a faint hint of rubber?? Honey and lightly salted butter. Subtly grassy. Hints of liquorice and something like washing-up liquid...

Finish: Honeyed and fruity, with a very small amount of peat making a brief appearance. Cognac notes, butter, grass and possibly a faint hint of liquorice develop shortly after, but it's the citrus that lasts.

Does cognac work with whisky? From this evidence I'd have to say no, as I found this one rather difficult to enjoy. It's not bad whisky by any means but it's too disjointed: the cognac just seems out of place and at odds with the rest of the spirit, which is a shame as minus the cognac this appears to be perfectly good. Worth trying a dram of, but I honestly couldn't recommend anyone buy a bottle unless they're really into cognac-ACEd - sorry, finished - whiskies.
