Something similar to Midleton's Irish whiskey?

Postby danielbuck » 25 Jan 2011, 06:33

I'll start by saying I don't know a whole lot about Irish Whiskey, but a friend of mine gave me a bottle of Midleton 2009 "Very Rare". I enjoy it off and on, and I'd like to try and find something similar to it.

I suspect that it's probably $100+ per bottle, I'd like to find something 1/3rd that price that might be worth trying. Any suggestions? I have had a few bottles of the standard bushmills original, it was ok. Had a bottle of Redbrest 12, it was ok as well, but something about it I wasn't to keen on.

Any suggestions?

Try Knappogue Castle and see if it fits what you're looking for.
John Valuk is dead, he fell on his head. But perhaps John Parker will get through with our message to Buckaroo Banzai.

There's no sherry matured whiskey in the Midleton Very Rare, so I think your best bet is Powers, probably Powers 12. There's some sherry in there, but not much, I think. It's also a blend of pot still and grain whiskey. You can get it for €35, or thereabouts. Or you could try the Jameson 18, but that's quite expensive. It also has some sherry wood.

Other whiskeys from the same distillery are...

Tullamore Dew
Tullamore Dew 12
Tullamore Heritage
Jameson
Jameson 12
Jameson 18
Jameson RVR
Paddy
