OB 10yo 45.8% "Map label" - Talisker

Nose: some iodine and peat, but a hefty dose of camphorated oil :? Seaweed and pepper!

Palate: peat again with salt. Is there some sort of fruit behind it? Hard to tell because the famed Talisker pepper has just kicked in.

Finish : pepper and yet more peat. Hmm is there some anise or liquorice in there? Not sure

A big bold whisky that is one of the few I don't add even a drop of water to (usually)

Talisker 10 (map label)

Nose : Peaty, with a trace of TCP and some iodine notes. Seaweed (kelp).
Some sweetness comes in after a while - almost like a trace of vanilla, but hard to pin down.

Palate : Smooth and warming with a big hit of peat followed by pepper and - yes it's liquorice! A big mouthfilling malt this.

Finish : Long finish that I'm still tasting a few minutes later. Peppery and peaty. And a little milk chocolate in the background.

This was one of my favourites back in the map-label days. I don't recall when they stopped the map-label - this bottle must be from the very late '80s I think.

Nose: Peppery. Fairly peaty and spicy. Coal smoke. Fruity notes - green apple, a touch of citrus. Hints of desiccated coconut? Quite sweet - touches of marzipan, sugar and possibly baklavas - and a little honeyed.

Palate: Pepper! Also some sweet peat and fruit again. Lightly salted. Perhaps a soft sherry-like character in the background.

Finish: Pepper... Quite sweet, with some peat coming through after a few seconds that lasts a good while.

Much more peppery than the most recent bottlings, especially on the palate. It also has more body and seems to be a little richer.
