Decent Accommodation in Elgin, Aberdeen, Edinburgh?

Postby Peat Sampras » 23 Jan 2013, 22:31

HI Folks

My Girlfriend's parents visit Scotland in June and will do a little tour comprising Islay, Speyside and some stuff between. I have been able to give them good advice for most places, however they look for good accommodation in or around Elgin, Aberdeen and Edinburgh for one night each. This can be Hotels or B&Bs but should be rather good class without being exorbitantly expensive. Can you recommend something?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have a clue about Edinburgh but I have friends in Elgin who I will ask for recommendations. Aberdeen however is very seldom cheap and even less frequently good value. Can you let me know the exact date required and I can make enquiries as different dates mean hugely different prices? Would they consider serviced apartments as these can sometimes be picked up at a reasonable price especially at the weekend. Another option would be staying at Stonehaven, a lovely wee town just outside the granite city.

If Dufftown is not too far for them in regard to Speyside then definitely check http://www.fernbankdufftown.co.uk/

Karen is a wonderful and very professional lady (you can mention my name, my real name that is, to her while booking).

Peat, you should be better in Edinburgh in June than August (festival month). There are plenty of reasonably priced, and expensively priced, places to rest. However, it is a popular city for tourist and business visitors, and booking early is probably the only way to get the best deal. Usual hotel search engines will help give you a flavour of price. I'd aim for somewhere in the New Town if possible, near St Andrew's Square.

As Andyt has suggested, Aberdeen is just unbelievable at the moment, with sky-high prices for beds, propped up by the oil game visitors. Weekends are definitely better than mid-week, price wise. Malmaison is a great, reasonably new hotel, and if you can get in early enough, there are deals to be had (~£80 for a double room under deal conditions, last I checked, admittedly a while ago).

Get it wrong though (leave it late, mid-week, etc...), you are looking at near London (UK, for the avoidance of doubt for our canadian brethen) prices for a bed in an industrial estate (avoid Dyce, Altens) with zero amenities and miles from anywhere.

Good hunting

Thanks for your help, guys, I appreciate it.

They will be there sometimes between 1 and 15 June afaik. Stonehaven is a good idea, as they will surely want to see Dunnottar anyway! I will pass on your advice and if you have other ideas, just let me know!

Compared to Switzerland, Scottish prices are quite affordable, btw. ;)

Cheers!

Hi Peat, hopefully I'm not coming here too late but last year I was asking the same question about Edinburgh as I needed a night in town at each end of a few days stay.

In the end I chose a quite remarkable place, easy walking distance (5-8 minutes) of the main central attractions and what can only be described as "your own playboy mansion in Edinburgh".

It's small-ish with not too many bedrooms and nothing is too much trouble for them when it comes to guests' comfort.
The name of the place is the actual address "No.1 Royal Circus" and although a little more expensive than I originally wanted to spend, it is really an amazing place. The decor is 100% jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and their basic philosophy is to make each guest feel like they are in their own personal town centre playboy mansion.

I have another thread somewhere on my original choices and selection process, I'll see if I can find it ......

Edit:
Ahh that was easy ....... here's my original thread about Edinburgh.

Page down to see actual links to my choices, maybe if Jugendstil is not their style, try the Bruntsfield which looks excellent. There are also some other nice looking recommendations from forum members.
