What did you learn today?

Anything and everything that is not whisky.

What did you learn today?

Postby Malt-Teaser » 28 Feb 2012, 01:06

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but I'm not so sure about that.

Today I learned some new rules at pool, well it is more than 20 years since I last played seriously.

More importantly, I learned a new verb "To Favorite" (as opposed to "To Favourite"). OK, so in either form I never realised that "favourite" was a verb, but this new-fangled twitter thing tells me that someone "favorited" one of my tweety thingies.

There you go, what did you learn today?

Something very personal here....

Today I learned today that even though you think you're completely on top of a situation, it only takes one bastard to remind you that you're not...

...this is not forum or whisky related in any way, I might add...

I learned from Lofty Wiseman's SAS Survival Handbook that in times of desperate thirst one can suck the water from an animal's eyes to survive. The other recommended technique is to squeeze fresh water from live frogs.

We're renovating a hallway upstairs. Off with the old covering, down to the stud walls. On with the sheet rock (and requisite taping and mudding). I finally, today, after six years of hanging rock, taping, mudding and painting, got a seam absolutely perfect. All you folks who do this for a living: buzz off. I'll never be a pro, but this one seam is perfect--the best of my best. Wow. (Tomorrow I'll "fix" the other seams!)

In the past couple of days, I have learned quite a bit about gout, including how painful it can be.

Yesterday Mrs les and two of our daughters flew to Manhattan, just for 8 days. Today I've had it reinforced how much I miss her when she's not here. She's gong to pop up on the webcam of 46th and 7th later and wave to me.

I also learnt that the end of a loaf of bread is called The Heel nad not the crust. In France it's called the Knobby.

Now the next most painful thing you'll learn is all the great things you shouldn't eat.

My interpretation is that it can be 'neither, nor' or 'either, or' dependent on the specific context. It seems to me that Claus was referring to a particular situation rather than generalising. ;)

Hope you get back on top of that particular situation soon Claus! :)

Meat, fish, and beer...that's my whole diet! Actually, the dietary advice almost sounds like the opposite of everything I've been told for the past fifty years--legumes, whole grains, oily fish, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, peas, and oatmeal, bad; dairy, coffee, tea, chocolate, fats and oils, cakes and cookies, good. (Okay, I'm cherry-picking for effect.) But I'm not going to worry about it too much right now--it was a relatively mild attack, hurt really bad for less than 24 hours. I've probably been a little too steady with the beer for the past couple of months, so could stand to cut back there. We'll see how it goes. The worst thing will be having to be a bit more careful when I go on vacation to the UK for five weeks.

Willie, this was a situation that I had put alotta effort into, that got ruined by a bastard even though I thought I was in control... but yes, you can interpret it in more than one way, so feel free... I'm not gonna elaborate further on this anyway

I gather it's the act of being a bastard in itself that does the reminding.
