Moving to Edinburgh

Postby ClubSmed » 05 Apr 2012, 10:52

Hi,

I am going to be moving to Edinburgh later in the year (June/July) and wanted to pick the brains of those on the forum who have lived, or currently live in Edinburgh.

I want advice on where to live, at the moment I am mainly considering Leith, Silverknowes and South Queensferry and would like to hear thoughts on this or any other suggestions.

My current criteria is:
1) Easy access to ring road
2) Up to 30 minutes drive to Rosyth train station
3) Up to 30 minutes train/bus journey to Edinburgh Centre
4) Reasonable rental prices for 3 bed properties
5) Decent schools

Any and all help in this matter very much appreciated.

Reasonable rental is a very subjective criterion. I lived in Murrayfield and it ticked all your other boxes. Silverknowes would be disappointing. Leith isn't perfect but you dan get much more of an "Edinburgh" feel there than you ever would out on the ring road.

Hi Matthew,

moving to Thornhill, Dumfriesshire in a few weeks. Had all of the same questions as you before settling on Thornhill. Definitely planning several trips to Edinburgh so will look you up once you're up there.

OBJECTION! Leith does not give you an Edinburgh feel. It is much friendlier. It certainly isn't perfect though.

Living within crawling distance of Willie's sample stash would be a bonus. :D

If you lived near Willie's stash you wouldn't have to "Weep No More" ...

As it turns out, I am now moving to Glasgow insted due to my Wife getting a job there so I will be commuting.

The next week will involve a lot of packing, special care to be taken over the content of the man cave!

Well done. A great place to live. What part of Glasgow are you moving too? I lived and worked in Glasgow for twenty years and enjoyed every minute. Met and married Mrs B in Glasgow, she being Glasgow lass, who still has family living there. Plus we have three children all at Glasgow universities, so have a lot of ties with the city. Sometimes I wonder why we live in Inverness; we’re never away from Glasgow up and down the A9 like a yoyo.

Hope your move goes to plan and the contents of the man cave arrive intact. As for the commuting, best done via the train, only takes about 30 minutes with a train every 15 mins. Enjoy your time there and all the best to you and your family.

Cheers John
