N - You could nose this for ages, so much going on....... heavy notes of new leather and tobacco at first then floor varnish, stewed fruits, mincemeat, musty dunnage warehouse, with hints of dates, walnuts, coffee and hickory. Even a wee touch of menthol.
T - Some old drams fail to deliver on the palate, what they promise on the nose, for me but this one certainly delivers.... and then some. Much of what's on the nose plus treacle toffee, and then all types of fruits - fresh, dried, crystalized and tropical, the one I can detect strongly is apricot. A wee whaft of smoke at the end, then the spices start to crackle and fizz.....
F - A 'spice-fest' - cinammon, nutmeg and clove all mingle together. Chocolate and nuts (for those in the UK that can remember, the brand Duncans Hazelnut Chocolate springs to mind). Makes the mouth water then dry then water again. Just drifts on and on and on .....
Such a well integrated dram, sherried and heavy but at the same time balanced and graceful. Certainly the best blend and one of the best whiskies I've ever had.
The label says 'bottled from cask at full marrying strength' and from the particles floating around the bottle I would confidently guess that it's not chill-filtered, perhaps ony barrier-filtered. To me this helps the dram greatly
For those that like a good old sherried & complex dram. Just wish I had a wee stash
