Redbreast 12 £20 @ Waitrose

Postby The Craw » 16 Oct 2009, 09:40

Special Offer - Save 23%
Offer ends 3rd November

96 points and proclaimed 'Irish Whiskey of the Year' according to a recent whisky publication.

Moreso, at prices of around double that in € in its domestic market this is a steal for UK consumers.

Great deal.

Worth mentioning some of Waitrose's other current offers as well:

Yamazaki 10yo - £20
Yamazaki 12yo - £28
Glenlivet 15yo French Oak Reserve - £24.99
Bowmore 12yo - £19.99

and one other not on offer as such, but much cheaper than anywhere else:

Aberlour 16yo Double Cask Matured - £29.99

I have to say that this really chaffs my wick. With so little 'specialist' Irish whiskey available Waitrose discounting an excellent brand like Redbreast (meant for the specialist retailer) to such a heavy extent (£20 is less than the wholesale price even when bought direct from Pernod Ricard) is disastrous for the small independent retailer.

Yes it's great for consumers but, again, another great brand with premium status has been devalued. When you consider that Redbreast retails for £28.99 in most if not all independent specialists, £20 is a real slap in their face for their continued help and support. C'mon Pernod, sort it out!

Interesting point but the consumer is king and long may that continue in my book (but I would say that as I'm only a consumer after all.)

David, I'm sorry that this offer has irked you somewhat. As a related point, do you think that Pernod de-value the Aberlour brand when they discount the A'bunadh at certain times of the year? Furthermore, you can often buy Aberlour 10 discounted to around £15.

One could argue that offers on such premium brands make them more accessible to the average whisky drinker, and as such inclusive rather than exclusive like some brands have become, which will in turn increase brand loyalty and build market share. Something you don't see a lot of in the whisky world these days.

Probably for debate in another thread but it's an interesting one the effect that discounting has on brands, with consumers and suppliers views often in conflict.

Leither as a fellow consumer you are so right and I had to get one. I might even ask my dad to get me another before the offer ends as he shops there each week. Cheers Dad. It looks good as well.

Well done Les, a nice autumnal shot as well.

I'm just back from Waitrose myself - I stocked up but have left some for others. It was interesting to see that they had old stock with bottles from batches dated L6, 7 and 8 so they can't be shifting much stock I wouldn't have thought or maybe want to get rid of some old stock (although I suspect they would want to label up a new bottle run with 'Best WhiskEy in the World' ie a Bible Gold Award or whatever it is).

Just another thought on the pricing/discounting of this.......

I would imagine that Pernod Ricard (being a major competitor of Diageo in the spirits world) may want to compete and grab some (more) market share from Black Bush, with Jameson and its ancillary brands. Indeed, I would note that RB12 has now replaced BB as my staple Irish whiskey, and as such their discounting has clearly worked by converting me from a loyal BB consumer (for many years) to RB. Anyway, just a thought from a consumers perspective.

Hi Paul (or Less ?= more southernly),

Do you know if Waitrose delivers to Holland? A box(4 or 6?) If not , is there another possibility to send a box to Holland? Maybe by ferry, pick it up and back to Holland on the same day? This is so tempting ;)

Such a shame, the Glasgow store does not open till the 12th Nov.
If I had all the money I've spent on whisky, I'd spend it on whisky.

I'd have thought if Pernod sell in volume to the likes of Waitrose, then it is patently not intended for the specialist retailer

Jimmy, you can buy online:

http://www.waitrosewine.com/230227742/Product.aspx

You don't need to buy 12 or even 6 bottles if you call them (delivery is free).

In fact their call centre (John Lewis Direct) is in Erskine. Some of you Glasgow guys eg Glasgow Whisky Club could get together for a joint order.

I might give them a call, 2 bottles is plenty.

Magically, this has disappeared from my local store. Not sold through. Just not a stocked line. It'll be back once the promotion ends, no doubt.

The same thing happened with the last a'Bunadh promotion.

Sneaky.
