Latest Waitrose

Postby Pete Smoke » 04 Oct 2011, 20:12

Both the Redbreast 12 and the standard Connemara Peated are labelled as "reduced to clear" and are both available for less than £20. Also amongst others -

Glenlivet 18 £32 ish
Lochnagar £26
I've spent a lot of money on whisky and women, the rest i squandered

Redbreast for me too.

As Tim forecast, with TWE now showing £39.95 for RB12, Waitrose are better than half the price at £19.87. Fantastic value.

Wow that is a good deal. My dad picked up the last one in the St Albans store yesterday for me. Cheers Dad.

Why the clear out? Are they getting a new label to go with the new price?

That is a good deal - I'd be buying several bottles at that price.

Possibly. The newer packaging in TWE highlights the Single Pot Still message. The bottles I'm seeing in Waitrose all have the older Pure Pot Still tag.

However, a shop like Waitrose probably doesn't see itself as an Irish Whiskey specialist and may not be too troubled by labelling. They may just be just juggling their spirits range ahead of the winter season.

(Mind you, if the bargain price WAS triggered by the label change then to hell with the Real Whisky campaign. I'll just be campaigning for label changes from now on!)

Most likely discontinued and they are clearing the shelves, anyway dropped in to Waitrose but they were sold out. However they have Lagavulin 12 (2009 release) for £49.99 so it was not a wasted journey.
If I had all the money I've spent on whisky, I'd spend it on whisky.

My local branch is out of Lagavulin 12 at the moment. People must be noticing it's a good price!

Latest offers include Aberlour A'bunadh (Batch 36 here) at under £25. Price is set to end by 8th November.

'Priced to clear' means just that - they're getting rid of their stock and it is unlikely to be listed again in the foreseeable. Redbreast is being withdrawn from the high street. Fill your boots while you can.

"Aberlour a'Bunadh (Batch 36) down to £24.15 in my store (ie £10 off). Plus I've been sent a 10% off everything card by Waitrose, which works with offer items. So, that takes it further to £21.75. Crazy money for a full-strength classic. Can I resist?

The card's green and credit card sized, with my name on it. It bears my name and is valid through to 4/11/11.
You just show it everytime you go to the checkouts and (regardless of spend), it takes 1/10 off the bill.

It even works with the 25% off 6 bottles of wine deal. If I bought say 12 bottles for £100RSP, that would initially go through the till at £75. Then, a further £7.50 would come off, bringing it down to £67.50. Trouble is that my father-in-law's just sent us an Autumn gift of 30 bottles of wine!

Oh my, that is a problem.

You realize, of course, that when you apply your 10% discount on top of the 25% for six bottles at a theoretical £100, you're only saving £7.50 instead of £10. I think you're getting ripped off. :?

In addition to the nationwide mark-downs (eg £10 off A'Bunadh), my store is selling off "discontinued" bottlings cheap.

"Lagavulin DE 1994" was £17 off. "Caol Ila Full Strength" was £16 off, etc. I didn't buy either, although tempted.

Wow, I would have found those very hard to turn down. Which store?

The Aberlour has now disappeared from the Waitrose website, so stocks must be sadly all but gone!

Johnnie Walker blue label was reduced from £182 to £99 in my local. Tempted but still didn't buy it!

Bought Dalmore 15 for around £34, HP18 for £45 and Lagavulin DE for £33 though. Some very heavily reduced discontinued lines so worth a visit to your local branch.
