Cheap!

Postby Jon.McGregor » 15 Feb 2012, 13:56

Hey guys, I'm curious if you guys now where I can get the best prices for single malts around my area.
I live in Canada, and the prices at the lcbo are jacked. Lagavulin 16 = 115 dollars.
So I live close to the border and get most of it over the states. Niagara falls/ buffalo.
I found a shop called liquor and wines supermarket. Prices seem much better lagavulin 16 = $80.
I'm just curious if you guys now any shops around niagar falls buffalo or even online shops that will ship to Canada.

Anything info you have will be great! THANKS!!

You're SOL / taking a huge risk on shipping something into Ontario. Customs will likely not let it through, or add 90% duty to the purchase price. 'Zunak' and 'dbk' on this forum are the gentleman who can best provide details.

My best suggestion is to plan some purchases for when you go into the US for 48+ hours. At that point, you have a duty free exemption of 1.14 litres / per person on spirits. Therefore, if you travel with two people, three standard sized bottles can be brought back without paying additional duties. Those duties, should you go over for less than 48 hours or exceed the previously mentioned exemption, apparently can range from 80-90% of the purchase price for people entering Ontario.

Always declare at the border, it has been suggested that you will get on Customs bad side real quick should they discover undeclared liquor.
The wishlist is always growing...

Welcome Jon

As Pete Smoke mentioned, join the Canucks over at the MLL - loads of info specific to our market - including:
- new LCBO listings
- product/pricing updates
- shopping in the USA
- items available for sampling.
- Spirit of Toronto (excellent annual event)
- b*ching/complaining about the evil monopoly (mostly from me  )
- and loads more stuff

Bottom line ... virtually nothing is "cheap" in Ontario (except the single bottle of Kilchoman that was recently returned to a store in Ajax and may still be available for $35)

Yeah, that was the screw-up of the century.
Unfortunately, the (apparent) bad blood that resulted between the LCBO and the distributor/distillery probably means we may never see another Kilchoman listing in Ontario. :-o

Thanks for all the info guys! This really hopes.
I have yet to find the maple leaf lounge, so I imagine that link will help SO much.
Damn it sucks being Canadian sometimes! Ugh. Lol!
But I guess I'll leave my complaints to the MPL

The single bottle of Kilchoman lasted all of one day on the LCBO site...no more listing.
