Poit Dhubh 21yo 43%

Poit Dhubh 21yo 43%

Postby Mark C » 19 Apr 2009, 19:45

Color: Amber, Maple Syrup

Nose: Barley sugar, musky woodiness. Leather. Ripe bananas.

Mouth: Peppery and dark sugar.

Finish: Pepper and saltiness. A dark sweetness like burnt sugars. Blood oranges.

Comments: Obviously has Talisker in this. Possibly caramel but not sure what gives it the dark colour. Hopefully sherry casks and not caramel.

It's never too late to reply! ;)

I've been told Poit Dhubh is 90% talisker, and that there are more sherry casks in the mix than in a OB Talisker.

The 21is my fave of the range for sure. I tried the 12 which is really nice. The 30 is way too tannic for my liking...and I was really looking forward to it, and expecting so much after liking the 12 & adoring the 21 :(

Btw, what's the real story about the illicit still? It can't be true in these modern days I guess... is it just marketing blurb?

I tried the whole Poit Dhubh range recently and was very impressed. The 12yo is excellent value for money, whilst the 21yo was superb. I agree with the above comment that the 30yo was a little too tanic and nowhere as good as the 21yo.

I was also informed that all expressions are a vatting of Skye, Mull, and Islay malts and mostly matured in ex-sherry casks.

I have only tried the 8yo (I have finished this bottle now) and the 12yo (I still have some left :P ) and I have enjoyed both, particularly of these two, the 12yo. I agree that the 12yo is absolutely worth the comparatively inexpensive price. I haven't tried the 21yo, but I'm certainly going to try and get some based on your comment and my experience of the range so far.
I must remember to forget....
