The superstructure protects the wooden bridge from the elements, significantly extending its life. Covered bridges are common in the northeastern US and eastern Canada, where there is plenty of ice and snow in the winter. The longest covered bridge in the world is in Hartland, New Brunswick.

They are truly amazing. I was kind of expecting a 'daft' explanation other than -

Once appreciat- ed simply for their ability to get travelers from one side of the river to the other,

but that is daft enough!

Iowa, if my memory serves me correct, is the westernmost extension of this type of architecture that diffused from New England and Pennsylvania toward Midwest in 1800s.
