Earlier this weekend a Adelphi Laudale(Glenfarclas). Tonight Port Akaig cask strength.
Maybe not as good as the CI cs... but certainly good enough. :P

BenRiach Authenticus, Rosebank 15y HB 1990 and Springbank 11y HB 1995.
My first try of each of these distilleries and all very tasty!

Whyte & MacKay 13. A workmanlike/ sessional dram but not something to rave about.

Quinta Ruban, which I brought home after exchanging it for the biggest swill to ever come out of Scotland. That would be the Highland Park 12, which I usually enjoy as I do other HPs, particularly the 18, but this was absolutely terrible. Cork destroyed it and it smelled like the back of a Chevy Bronco after a successful deer-hunting trip. I felt adventurous and, oh how foolish, decided to taste it. Four seconds later the local store received my call, because I had to make a choice between keeping the bottle for car polishing or having it returned for in-store credit.

I've recently opened a bottle of HP12 that I bought inbound dutyfree at Melbourne airport on Sunday morning. Had to walk through the shards of a bottle of HP16 to get to the cash register. Someone had dropped it and at 6am, no one seemed inclined to tidy up. The shoes I was wearing still smell of the stuff.

(Have to say, I've had shoes that smelled worse ;) )

Bacardi 8yo. I heard this is the best Bacardi around but am not convinced. Sofar, I think it is a disaster.

970 ml to go.

Fettercairn 13yo 1991 OMC. Quite big and malty with some serious off notes at first tasting. We'll see how it develops after a few days open.

Interesting. I found this to be one of the easiest spirits to drink that I've run accross (although I've only had one sample). Not horibbly complex although acceptable given its price point.

Last Tuesday I opened up my brand new Laph 18yo. I expected a firm whisky but I'm somewhat disapointed. Don't get me wrong, it's a good whisky. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Laph 10 40%, Maca 12 40% (old label), Bruichladdich 12 2nd ed & Bakery Hill Peated CS.
More damn wine in the Bruich! Seems like Rioja and another red at work here, Shiraz maybe? What's wrong with straight American Oak for goodness sake!
The Laph and Maca are great but maybe not as good as their 43% bottlings a few years back.
The BHPCS is turning out to be a pleasant surprise, the best Aussie whisky i've had by far. Not even sure you could pick it as Australian tasted blind.

Glengoyne 12yo CS - extremely sweet, rich and luxurious. Relatively straightforward, but definitely one for the sweet-toothed (like me!).

Glen Grant 27yo 1980 51.6% (Hogshead #20294) bottled at Bladnoch - earthy, dunnage warehouse and flinty. Complex, I think this one will need some closer investigation to work out in full. One thing for sure is that these forum bottles from Raymond offer outstanding value.

I have to agree - that GG is an excellent bottle!

scotchio wrote:Cadenheads Clynelish 1965(23) 51%, sadly it's only a mini I found so I can't be offering samples. Yes it's a Brora but it tastes like a very good 23 year old Clynelish as it's from the preheavy peat period. To me it shows how well they replicated the old Brora when they built Clynelish and proves that should they choose they could replicate those Brora's from the 70s that are so very good and so stupidly expensive now.Plenty distilleries seem to cope with doing more peaty runs and dispose of the intermediate versions successfully so why not Clynelish? Diagio could make an absolute killing

Well, it's a Clynelish...that distillery was only called Brora after the fact. But that's a valuable bit of information. I've long questioned the idea that "Brora" is a dead distillery--in my mind, it's no more so than any other distillery that has been rebuilt or refurbished. The sabot in all of this is the very peaty bottlings for which Brora is now famous--which are in fact what people think of when they think of Brora. My impression has been that these particularly peaty runs were done to replace those missing as Caol Ila was being refurbished. (These were all intended for blending, of course.) And speaking of dead distilleries, it was the refurbished Caol Ila that made Port Ellen entirely redundant.

History is a funny thing...you might wish that you could go back in time and prevent some particular event from happening. But things are more interconnected than we realize, sometimes, and I think the unforeseen consequences of such would be just as unpleasant, or maybe worse.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask - considering it as the warming dram for my Christmas tasting, so needed to eview it as I haven't had one for a while.
