How many open bottles do you have?

Postby C57 » 07 Dec 2009, 23:22

I thought there was a thread for this, but I can't find it

I just opened one for the first time in months ( :-o ) and now have 49 open.

I guess that thread is only one the WM forum.

I only have 2 open right now but it will probably be 4 at the end of the week. Im keeping it low these months.

A'bunadh #23 and Balvenie 15 SB.

Im trying to cut back on my consumption and having less open bottles is helping me a little. Variety is killing me obviously...I am starting to feel for a peated dram.

9 Single Malt Scotch, 1 scotch blend, 1 Irish blend, 1 Bourbon, 2 Canadian blends. So 14...which is a couple more than I usually have open.

Inventory says I have 21 open. I'm not sure I believe that--I really need to do some housecleaning here in the Midden Heap. As well, there are three open bottles yet to be logged in, purchased this year in Scotland. Or four, maybe. Geez, I'm really slacking off. So say 25. I'd really like to finish off ten or fifteen and open ten or fifteen others.

I tend to restrict my open bottles to around about 25, 30 max. For a while I was trying to restrict it to 15 or so but I feel that a couple of dozen offers more variation in terms of weather/mood/style etc for when I fancy a change of pace and is generally much more fun.

Anyway, here's what my inventory tells me I have open:

Ardbeg 10
Bowmore 1998 (AD Rattray)
Bunnahabhain Darach Ur
Pure Islay Malt 10 (Sainsburys)
Highland Park 1992 (Clydesdale)
Talisker 18
Campbeltown CV Malts (3 x 20cl)
Springbank 10 CS
AnCnoc 16
Ardmore Traditional Cask
Clynelish 1992 DE
Glengoyne 12 CS
Aberlour A'Bunadh #25
Balvenie 15
Glen Grant 27 (Bladnoch Forum)
Glenrothes 17 (MWBH)
Mannochmore 1992 (Cadenheads)
Bladnoch (New Make)
Bladnoch 1985 (G&M)
Isle of Skye 8
Famous Grouse Malt 10
Pure Malt 18 (Lidl)
Bushmills Select Casks 12
Redbreast 12
Nikka from the barrel
Yamazaki 10
Elijah Craig 12

Plus I have around a dozen small bottles from my own leftovers (as soon as a 70cl goes down to less than a third left it gets tipped into a 20cl) and 'tasters' ranging from 5cl to 20cl. Also I have a 35cl bottle of a 'personal vatting' of some old (>30yo) Grains, mainly consisting of early 70's Invergordons (from Bladnoch Forum).

I tend to drink considerably more whisky in the winter, rather than summer, months (dark nights and cold weather tend to impact my consumption rate) so it will be interesting to review this list in the Spring of next year.

Lagavulin 21 (almost gone)
Glengoyne Oak Wood Finish (newly opened, yum)
Talisker 10 (previous bottle design? clear bottle, island on label)
Talisker 175th
Clynelish 14 (with some disappointing 31 yo Mckillops Clynelish vatted in; i'll know what to think of this tonight)
2009 McCarthy's
Yamazaki 18
Yoichi 1986/2008 Single Cask 59%

I find the more I have open the more I drink the more I buy, and so I'm trying to cut it down to 5 or 6 and attempt, in the future, to curate a satisfying ensemble.

I had a blue fit Willie!

Actually it's all down to the upcoming tasting. Having decided it was Christmas Drams, I had to come up with them, and the top ones I thought of, that really fitted, meant opening 3 fresh bottles.

I may also have to open the Sherry Cask Yamazaki I just bought, to see whether it fits better than one of the others I selected.

It's a hard life

Is that one of the 18yo casks? I tried one of those a wee while ago and it was incredible. Not for the faint hearted though.

It's a NAS Willie.

I had a meeting at one of our offices today which is, sadly, right next to Vinopolis. I mean, next door. Well, :iwbrnt: wouldn't it?

So I took a look around and this grabbed my attention. Just labelled as "The Sherry Cask Yamazaki" and with no age on it.
I'll have a closer look later and see whether it des have an age and I missed it.

Wow! It could get expensive if that keeps happening.

I see the bottle you got on the TWE website. The one I had was one of the Cask of Yamazaki bottlings and it was awesome. Hopefully yours is as good.

I think the Cask of Yamazaki was considerably more expensive I believe? And cask strength. (48% isn't bad though...)
I suspect this won't be up to that, though the TWE guy reckoned it was excellent.

I had a look in the tasting notes and it was 60%. The price was £80+ as I recall. Still 48% isn't bad and who knows, it could be great.

I forgot to mention, another reason why I am choosing to have less open bottles, is my personal shelf starts to look too much like a commercial bar (especially when you dont like storing your bottles in the boxes/tubes). Then if you start stashing them away out of sight, its just like having the boxes...separating you to your whisky when wanting a drink.

I dont want to hear from family or others, "you're drinking all those???".
