Good thread.

I need feedback on A'bunadh #30. In the unofficial A'bunadh thread here I think 2 of you claimed disappointment.

Also Auchentoshan 12.

I'm about to purchase a Yoichi 15 for my festive stash. Also a Mackmyra, but i can't decide which, maybe the Special 03, or possibly The First Edition which is cheaper but i know nothing about.
I've spent a lot of money on whisky and women, the rest i squandered

That might be a tricky one. I'd check on the Bladnoch website if there is a review, and failing that post a question on the Bladnoch Forum.

Alternatively, you could buy an excellent and affordable OB Bladnoch from that era. TWE had a large selection a few weeks back; I don't know their stock at this moment. You could buy directly from the distillery, but you'll have to pay 25 GBP=$40 shipping per bottle (they can't combine shipping to the US).

I have 4 or 5 different OBs (8 yo; 8 yo slightly peated; 20 yo CS and 1 or 2 16-19 yo 55%). Great stuff.

you're in california, right? any troubles at all with shipping from twe? i've often got as far as the final purchase screen and then hesistate and give up for fear that international shipping/customs might leave me holding a credit card payment receipt but no whisky.

I do not live in California but my son studies at Stanford and I ordered whiskies from both TWE and Nickolls&Perks and shipped to him without any problems. It takes up to 3 days for the delivery. I have ordered 5 bottles in the last 4 months (mostly Karuizawa) and did not have any problems. I do recommend TWE!

TWE uses courier service from Parcelforce Worldwide - £26.00

By the way, I never paid any state tax (no VAT either)

That topic has been repeated many times on many forums. I think it is safe to say that (1) you're not allowed to import alcohol, unless you have a license, (2) no one ever seems to run into trouble, and (3) if one runs into trouble, it is likely on the state rather than the federal level (so, you should check in with Minnesotans).

TWE writes collectible glassware and decanters, or something along these lines, on the declaration and includes an accurate invoice. Occasionally, I've had a shipment intercepted. I had to write a check for 6-8% of the declared value plus $5 at the door (much better than the other way around; the EU always intercepts shipments and adds custom bills - about 10 Euro per bottle).

One time I had a Ben Wyvis coming; I didn't sleep for a week.

TWEs packaging is often substandard. Boxes often get damaged/scuffed. Sufficiently safe for drinking bottles, but not for collectible items.

Funny, I have ordered from TWE and found their packaging to be exceptional! Its where my elements of islay, glenmorangie 25, bruichladdich black art and golder still, and many others came from. All double boxed, peanuts in and around the whisky container, bubble wrap. Damn things were HARD to UNWRAP! That's my experience anyhow!

As for what I want next, I am planning on some Highland Park and a Macallan as I have neither in my cabinet at the moment. Probably the 18 years for both :)

I also think that TWE packaging is good. The presentation boxes are folded for shipment.

returning to the proposed topic of the thread: i don't think anyone will lead you away from the highland park 18 (though my recent blind tasting might recommend a stop at the 15 along the way). the macallan 18 is good but quite over-priced (at least in the u.s).

I have the following on my "to buy" list:
Macallan 18YO 1990 (crazily expensive in Canada - C$250)
Laphroiag 30YO
Mortlach (want to try F&F and something older)
Karuizawa 1968 (Only available at La Maison du Whisky, as far as I know)

also thinking of GlenDronach 1989 (cask #3315)

I should have said sometimes. At times it is indeed as you described, but I've had boxes (always big ones, for 12 bottles) filled up only for two thirds with peanuts, presentation boxes pierced and inserts torn because bottles were not immobilized in their presentation boxes. I never had problems to get replacements, though.

IMO you can't go wrong with the Yoichi. For me the standard Yoichi range is the best standard range of whisky's in the world.
My order of preference though from lowest to highest is NAS, 10, 15, 12, 20 non vintage.

I'm thinking of buying the following, has anyone tried it?

I just bought that recently as well. Here you go:

Colour: Dark Amber
Nose: Dried figs, prunes, cherries, just a hint of smoke.
Palate: Figs, prunes and cherries again, stronger smoke on the palate, gentle wood spice.
Finish: Very long, dry and a bit smoky.
Overall: A great balance between smoke and full-flavoured sherry. Very very nice, but the 40% bottling strength makes it a wee bit watery.

Rating: 85/100

Thanks a lot... now I'm just considering to look out for an older bottling, might well be that there are some left in the whisky shops in Zurich.
