The rest of my Centinella 3 Anos Tequila and some Raicilla (3 Hombres Blanco). Like the Blanco much better than the 3 Anos.

Lo and behold, Ralfy is doing some Tequila/Mezcal reviews...

GM Linkwood 15,seems to contain stuff of twice that age, shame it's a little thin at 43% but my best recent GM distillery bottling and my favourite Linkwood to date.Quite a big whisky with some highland smokiness and lots of well aged sherry wood and crucially no sulphur though at this strength it has a slightly dirty less than pristine feel.

Duncan Taylor NC2 Arran 1999 11 yr old
Arran Eagle
Old Pulteney 17 yr old
Master of Malt Secret Bottling Speyside 40 yr old
Ardbeg Supernova

The Eagle is very good but was shaded in a head to head by the NC2 version - though the Eagle is deeper and more complex with the sherry influence playing it's part. Very good though of the 4 Icons just shaded by the Peacock if my taste memory serves me correctly!

Tomintoul 21yo, 40% - a nice, clean, light single malt. Perfect for a Sunday evening. Sweet malty goodness, light fruits, a dash of oak. A little furry on the finish -surprising for its age. Not overly complex but a nice dram nonetheless.

Sampled some Buchanan's Black & White circa 1960s bottling courtesy bpbleus. Most unique nose I have ever experienced. Haunting stuff. Thanks bp!

After some Brora, a nice dram of GM Imperial 93 18, probably my favourite Imperial so far. Not especially exciting but nicely sherried and very easy drinking.

Talisker 25yr cask strength, 2009 bottling.
Glen Grant 22yr Duncan Taylor NC2 bottling 46% ABV.

This finishes off the sample I received from Mongo. It was great whisky and in a few weeks time I will crack open the 2005 bottling of Talisker 25yr that I bought after I got a first taste of this sample.

The Glen Grant 22yr was a really nice sherried dram. Very well balanced, elegant, and full bodied. Drink this one neat with no water.

i like that one a lot on the nose and on the first impression on the palate, but it falls apart for me very quickly after that, with the sherry separating out--in the finish i get a lot of cheap cooking sherry that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. i've mostly been running home blend experiments with this bottle.

I haven't gotten any of the nastiness you describe Mongo. I try not to go too much on first impressions but it is what it is, and I very much enjoyed this whisky last night. We will see if it holds up over time.

An interesting tasting yesterday,

Ardbeg Corry - Still my favourite
Ardbeg Rollercoaster,
Cheftains Ardbeg 11yr old - Like water with added smoke - could have downed a bottle.
CC Ardbeg - Notes of Vomit - not my thing.
Unpeated Caol Ila 8year old
13yo Cadeheads Laphroig - the most citrusy Lappy I have had.
Talisker 57deg North - very drinkable

There were some more but I forget..

it may just be my own aversion to that flavour. and, of course, everyone's palate is different.

balblair 1989-2010, 2nd ed.
scott's selection, glen elgin 1980-2005
tomatin 30, 1976 vintage
berry bros. & rudd, caol ila 31, 1980-2011

that tomatin 30 is really something; i'm very surprised at its middling malt maniacs rating--and serge's notes don't mention any of the intense tropical fruits i, and the other 7 people i tasted it with, remarked almost instantly on the palate and finish.

That's certainly possible. I'm always fascinated by other's take on whisky, but don't find it terribly important to reconcile differences of opinion. I will usually read though tasking notes here and reviews elsewhere, but even a few negative reviews won't necessarily prevent me from buying something that has captured my interest. Sometimes I like to buck trends and conventional wisdom.

At an SMWS tasting in Harrogate last night and had the following -

SMWS 7.74 Longmorn 21 yr old 53.1% - improved a lot in the glass after about 15 mins or so but not very special. Brought to an end a very good run of Longmorn's from the society several of which I've bought.

SMWS 39.86 Linkwood 21 yr old 45.5% - very drinkable and simply excellent. Bought!

SMWS 105.19 Tormore 28 yr old 55.1% - best dram of the night. Didn't buy as bought a sister cask 105.18 at a previous tasting. Ex-sherry but not a hint of sulphur.

SMWS 4.162 Highland Park 16 yr old 55.1% - should probably have been served before the Tormore as was lost in comparison - a gentle and quite understated HP if my memory serves me correctly.

SMWS 127.24 Port Charlotte 8 yr old 66.0% - described accurately as "light blue touchpaper and retire". Love it and bought it!

A very enjoyable night!

I sampled some samaroli last night...Tomintoul 1967: delicate and all pears. Glenlivet 1977: delicate and ever-evolving. Caol Ila 1980: big tobacco. Linkwood 1983: nice fruits, some exotic. And their vatted/malt-blend, Evolution: delicious sherry. All very nice and high quality, but not marketed toward me (or my income bracket).

Now that I have had my open bottle collection under control for while (around 15), it's time to start to work my way through my sample collection (104). My goal is to finish all samples for which I have a suitable tasting partner by the end of the summer.

Springbank OB for Whiskyklubben Sweden U137 (full bottle, 2nd tasting session) vs Rundlets & Kilderkins (1st go). They are not really good tasting partners, but I didn't know that beforehand.
U137: a no-nonsense straight shooting Bourbon SB that is rich in resinous/incense notes before dilution
R&K: Wow! this is much better than I expected. A big, rounded nose of SB style oranges and all good things SB. Did they use a few staves from sherry wood? Powerful in the mouth, but not as complex as the nose. I especially like the lingering 2nd flush Darjeeling notes in the deep finish. I must procure my own bottle of this.

Then, a few hours later, I wanted to pair a 20 yo and the 2009 25 yo Talisker graciously provided by mongo. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the latter in my normally well organized library. So instead, I went with
Glenrothes 1985-2005 (also from mongo; second go) vs Glenrothes 1984-2002 (sample from Teun).
I find Glenrothes problematic. The complex nose of the 1985 indicates skillful cask blending, whereas the nose of the 1984, though less complex, is also very nice. However, the palate is much less interesting. It goes really wrong in the finish, especially in that of the 1984, which is awfully bitter. There seems little hope for the future. The recent 1998 I tried a few weeks ago lacks the nice nose of older bottlings; in fact, it is immature and rather harsh.
