I enjoyed immensely a couple of drams of Aberlour A'bunadh batch 38 last night.

High West Rendezvous Rye - my new batch/bottling. At first opening it had kind of strong alcohol, dill, unpleasant notes. Poured, let it sit 10 minutes - improved. I left the bottle uncorked for several hours & it has gone DELICIOUS. It is not as good as the last batch I own; if the last batch scored 96/this one would score 95. It is a little less rounded, unctuous. I'm wondering if there is a bit more young rye in this batch since it has more of the herbal notes as opposed to the huge spice notes of the previous batch.

I also tried the High West Double Rye - this is an unusual rye & I would say not for a novice rye drinker. Has many gin botanical notes - almost too many. I happen to like gin so am not offended. They hit the nose/palate first & then it goes on to cinnamon, anise, rye. It's missing the deep cocoa flavors of an aged rye. Takes time to appreciate this one. That youthful rye is kind of a bully w/the older rye in the bottle.

A few drams last night...

Glenturret 1993 14 yr old 60.1% Distillery Bottling
Duncan Taylor NC2 Royal Brackla 1997 13 yr old
SMWS 123.6 Glengoyne 2001 10 yr old
SMWS 8.23 Tamdhu 1982 18 yr old
SMWS 120.4 Hakashu 18 yr old

All great drams but particularly enjoyed the Royal Brackla - first time I've tasted anything from this distillery that I can remember!

Yes, it is quite something, I managed to stock up on a few bottles while visiting the US and I have one more in reserve. I'm pretty free with my whisky (if you should drop by) but this is usually saved just for me and quiet moments.

Maker's 46 for me last night. The contents of this bottle are depleting at a relatively rapid rate. I really enjoy the additional maple overtones and greater depth (vis-a-vis the standard MM).

I've also been thoroughly (and frequently!) enjoying a home blend of 80% Benromach Peat Smoke & 20% Arran (cask-strength) Single Sherry Cask... The two, combined in these proportions, seen to play off one another to delicious effect.

My bottle of 18 Year Old Glenmorangie has also experience quite a bit of 'drinking damage' of late, as has the Jack Daniel's 1954 Gold Medal (nothing too exceptional as regards the latter, yet it certainly does go down rather easily).

I was at a wedding yesterday and was pleased to find out that the small malt selection of the restaurant we were eating at consisted of OP12 and the old Glen Scotia 14 dumpy bottle. That was all I needed :)

Signatory Caol Ila 2000/2011, 46%. simple sweet peat from start to finish. I found little citrus, iodine, or anise. Lagavulin 12 (2011). quite similar, but with nice oak/tobacco/tea on the finish.

SMWS 53.82 bottled in 2004 (distilled 1993 & a 10yo) which came from the American branch; it's been open forever but has held together perfectly and I polished off the bottle last night, excellent stuff.

I know a lot of people are down on Balblair, but 1997 is such a great, easy-drinking whisky. Love it.

I thought Balblair was generally well regarded. Nothing wrong with the 21yo I've been enjoying though I'd probably go for a younger one next time.

Nah just the standard 89. It's a nice whisky but I can see how a younger less oaked version might suit the lightness of the style better.Still can't see why anyone would be down on the stuff. My impression has been that Balblair has been growing in popularity and making some very good bottlings unless I missed somethingover the last 18 months

What did you drink last night

Postby Lawrence » 11 Mar 2012, 02:52

I started off with Isle of Arran 12yo Cask Strength which I enjoyed and feeling mildly bullet proof I went down stairs and found a bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh batch #14 (the legendary) which I proceeded to enjoy at a great rate forgetting it is CS. I'm taking a day or two off.

A Saturday session whilst watching Scotland's inevitable march to the wooden spoon.

SMWS 123.7 Glengoyne 2001 10 yr old 59.6% - from a port pipe. Excellent. Glad I ordered one of these on recommendation from our local SMWS ambassador!
SMWS 105.18 Tormore 1983 28 yr old 55.5%
Master of Malt 40 yr old Mystery Malt
Bowmore 18 yr old
SMWS 120.4 Hakashu 18 yr old

Dulled the pain a little!!
