What's your most recently opened bottle?

Postby C57 » 09 Feb 2009, 12:46

Well, we have the question What is your most recent purchase?
But what was the latest bottle you opened?

For me, it was the Royal Brackla 1991 12yo from Signatory

Rosebank cask 2095 distilled 3/7/1991
54.4% Bottled 2008 G&M Reserve
Refill bourbon barrel

Just noticed this one is distilled 2 days after the well appreciated SMOS bottling.
The SMOS doesn't have the cask number on it but: cask ref. I guess ref stand for reference number.
Just wondering who gave this number to the cask? SMOS probably...

What a coincidence! I just opened AP 25 yo as well!

It needs to be judged as a Canadian...lots of spice at the back of the palate. There is probably some caramel in this, but not so much as to make it "cheap". The rye flavour I've been pondering how to describe....grassy, oily, fruity (baked apples, overripe oxidized apples).

The one thing I recognize is a wonderfully silky texture and flavour that I remember distinctly from the Wiser's 18yo. Rye is the heart of Canadian whisky, it is the main flavour component. I really love this stuff. It is to Canada what Pure Pot Still is to the Irish!

P.S.: I still prefer malt whisky though, lots more complexity.

The AP i will have to try it again tomorrow night and report back but i do remember it being oily and i thought reckon i probably got quite a bit of caramel. I actually quite enjoyed it. One thing i'm going to do is put it against a couple of bourbons i have, whether thats the right thing to do we'll see.

Glenlivet 18, marvelous,a little more sherry and smoke(or is that cos I stopped smoking) than I remember from the last one and it's hell of a good. Best £27.50 I've spent for a while 8-)

If you ask me, this is where the Canadian Government has really allowed a golden opportunity to sail by silently. They have opted to encourage the Walmartization of lower cost whisky to drive our industry. Our legislation allows a cocktail of things to be added to the spirit. This lack of restriction encourages distillers to simply add flavourings to substandard whisky rather than actually TRY to make the spirit and whisky right in the first place!
