Caol Ila 12yr OB

I really love this stuff. It's bottled at 43% but I think it works very well at this strength. That said, there is a cask strength bottling of Caol Ila in my future, as well as a few older bottlings.

Today I found a very dusty 20 yo Laphroaig from the Caledonian Selection (1981-2001, cask strength) on an even dustier shelve in a local liquor shop (a dusty place). I had overlooked this bottle before, as it was misplaced (actually, everything is misplaced in this store) and the bottle with its giant stopper and feminine contours looks quite un-whiskily. More like Tequila, or even liqueur, liquids to which I usually don't pay attention. Since my find I've had a growing appetite for some big Islay, which culminated in the pour Royale in front of me: a 13 yo Laphroaig NC2 cask strength bottled exclusively for Binny's. 'Dirty' peat on the nose with a lot of smoked fish, smoked cheese, ash, leather, iodine, a little lemon, a hint of strawberry in vanilla-ed hot milk. Palate starts of with similar peaty and smoky notes, but gives way to liquorice root, which dominates the finish. Also rather peppery at times. All in all, clearly a big Laphroaig, but one that disappoints a bit in the finish.

5cl Deanston 12 46.3%. It's improving but still not up to the lovely honeyed thing it's capable of being

Auchentoshan 16yo 2007, 53,7%, OB - sweet, light, still 'full' enough great allround dram
Glengoyne 21yo 1990/2011 Sauterne Finish, 55,0%, OB - peach, toffee, cinnamon, soft, superb dram with a very nice balance and finish

Earlier an OB Macallan 10 which was no better than the OB Knockando 12.Very disappointing but at least it's just a mini.

Just now a much more interesting Sig Linlithgow 75 30 refill bourbon hoggy, some nice orangy barley but overall probably a bit too much oak . Very dry especially in the early palate but some nice moments when the orange barley fights back. This is another old sample so thanks again to the supplier from way back.

Del Maguey Chichicapa Single Village Mezcal 47.8% ABV

This makes for a fascinating comparison to Ardbeg 10yr. They are worlds apart in most ways yet bear some striking resemblances.

Just opened my bottle of Snow Phoenix. It's very nice! The other day, I opened my Forty Creek John K. Hall Double Barrel Reserve. It's nice, too. I poured some on the frying steak we had for dinner Sunday.

Resyl Plus, Cask strenght (53% ABV), non-chill-filtered (gets extremely cloudy when water is added). A bit one-dimensional (mostly aniseed)...

Earlier Caol Ila Cask NAS, quite nice but very young, later Sig Teaninich 1983 27 60%, like this one nice balance of barley and oak though apparently it's from a refill butt and all the oak flavours I got were classic bourbon. Hey ho,very nice whisky though,I think I'm a Teaninich fan

OB Dalwhinnie 73 29, very nice too. Honey smoke and citrus, reminds me of some of the less peaty 1981 Broras somehow. Which is nice :D

That's exactly why I bought this one, Solera. It has a few minor flaws but at least it's not over-priced and dulled down. :-)

In my attempt to reduce the size of my sample collection, I opened 2 samples from Teun:

Mannochmore 1976-1997 60.1% UDRM vs Mannochmore 1990-2009 OB Special Release. Again, not a perfect match as the first doesn't have much, if any, sherry, while the second does.

Mannochmore 1976-1997 60.1% UDRM. I have a weakness for those honeyed, fruity & floral, somewhat anonymous Speysiders, so it is not surprising I seem to like it a bit better than the pundits. It is well balanced, but it misses the complexity and evolution of the few other Rare Malts I've had the pleasure to try.

Mannochmore Special Release. A very well composed dram of the dry sherry kind. The nose is curiously lighter than the palate, which is brimming with dark chocolate, marmelade, grapefruit, etc.

Had a bit of a session this afternoon and ran through a number of whiskies. Thought I'd have a BrewDog Hardore IPA after dinner, only just realised it is 9.2%
