3 affordable mainstream whiskies

If you could only have three affordable, mainstream and readily available whisky's (max. 100£) which would it be? (and why)

For me:

* Ardbeg Corryvreckan: best mainstream peaty whisky out there imho, period
* Yamazaki 18yo: subtle, yet powerful and complex, incredibly balanced
* Glenmorangie Astar: has a great sweetness and roundness to it, at caskstrenght

I've taken 'mainsteam' to mean what it says, rather than expressions only available from specialists.

Aberlour A-Bunadh - I love sherried-finishes and I love the warm feeling from a full-strength whisky;
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban - I love port-finishes; and
Monkey Shoulder - Affordable and interesting.

Affordable? Well that's subjective!

For £100 per bottle.....

Lagavulin 12 for it's untamed rawness and smoke
Glendronach single casks, for my single cask sherry fix (there's enough of these released through the year to maintain a stash!)
The 3rd is more difficult to choose Perhaps Highland Park 21 because it has a little of everything.

Now 3 bottles for £100 because that's more affordable!

Bruichladdich 10 a really nice dram for it's price and may become top notch when there are more casks for the vatting.
Longrow CV, it's a nice peaty dram
Highland Park 12 again because it has good complexity

I think that my definition of mainstream and affordable would have knocked out all your selections

I have all three on hand at all times, including four different batches of A'bundah. I might have picked Laphroaig 10yr Cask Strength over the Ardbeg; a coin toss either way and either way I would be happy. I'm probably the only person responding who will put a bourbon ahead of a single malt, but there it is. My definition of affordable is $100 per bottle or less. My definition of mainstream is whisky that is stocked in most liquor stores (not specialty shops). I only considered distillery bottlings. Two out of three liquor stores in my neighborhood carry all three of my selections.

For Sherry monsters-Glendronach Single Casks

For Peat monsters-Laphroaig Cask Strength

Non-peat/sherry-A good independent bottling of Lochside.

100 pounds is about $160 US dollars, more than I am presently comfortable paying for a bottle. Not that I have a problem with the higher dollar stuff, I just kind of have to ignore it as it's beyond my middle class living. That $160 is 3 or 4 bottles for me. I am presently focusing on what is mainstream affordable here in California, and that seems to be the $30 to $60 dollar range, and based on present internet popularity and shelf availability, there's a lot to choose from.

My present foray into expanding my appreciation of single malt is only a few months old, and I'm basing my three on the dozen or so malts I've recently bought and which are in my above mentioned price range. All are between $55 and $60 here.

If I were to make a true budget malt list, malts that I really like that are bargains and Were bottles that I would buy if money were tight, they'd be:

I like those choices. Glenmorangie isn't to my particular taste, but I'll have to give it another go as I haven't tasted one in years, probably.

I might replace the last one with Lagavulin 16 or Redbreast.

Sorry, don't mean to pick on you...you are only following the poor example of the many native English speakers who slept through grade school. In fact, the Belgians, Swiss, Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, and many others who post here generally show a better command of English than some of the Brits and Yanks.

It could be becuae the 10 is cheaper than the QC in many markets but it's Hobson's Choice between the two IMHO.
