Always a bad idea. I came out with:

Tomintoul 21
Springbank Rundlets & Kilderkins
Inchgower 14yo F&F

Tomintoul 21 - Hmm
Springbank Rundlets & Kilderkins - Yum
Inchgower 14yo F&F - If you like Inchgower then this is good stuff

IMO of course :D

I do like Inchgower. I like Springer a lot, as you know.
Tomintoul - just an experiment. Many years since I had one as far as I can recall, and that was 10 or 12. IIRC it was thin and spirity and rather metallic. I just thought I'd see what may have changed over the years.

Tomintoul is light for sure, but the current range is generally pleasant. I particularly like the 12yo Oloroso finish and the peaty tang, both of which are great value imo, and the 14yo is nice, although its not the same one that JM raved about. I just thought that the casks that went into the the 21yo were a bit woody and bitter. I'll be interested to see what you think.

The new UCF Tomintoul 14yo at 46% is very good if you enjoy light and delicate malts.

Jefferson's Presidential Select 18y Bourbon.

This is some of the last whiskey that was probduced at the Stitzel-Weller distillery before it was closed. Others are the Pappy Van Winkle 20 and 23y.

"Glenmorangie Lasanta" from my darling daughter. We cracked it open last night and both Sue and I enjoyed it. Stunned to read in the Bible that (after a re-tasting) JM gave it only 68/100. The "sulphur" thing again.

JM can only report what HE gets from a whisky and I truly respect him for that. However, it is a shame that his notes may put many off trying "Lasanta"

Ah!! It makes sense now why so many whisky drinkers slate the Lasanta. I wasn't aware that Murray had marked it so low. I finished a bottle last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If it's a sulphur issue it could be batch based. Doesnt imply a sheepish mentality. Those who get lucky may find a good dram.I'm at the point where I wouldnt by another GM Mortlach 15 cos the last two are badly sulphured. Doesnt mean GM Mortlach 15 is rubbish just not worth risking again. I'll be very careful indeed before picking up another Mortlach.

I use the opinion of reviewers to inform my judgment -- but they do not rule it. There is no substitute for judging a whisky for yourself.

For example, it seems to me that whisky from Bowmore gets a lot of mixed reviews up and down their line. I have never had a Bowmore, and I may have delayed buying Bowmore based on reviews. However, I was determined to give some of their whisky a fair shake and bought a bottle of the 18yr a few days ago. I might not like the whisky, but I can already tell you that I won't regret the purchase. What I would have regretted is to allow reviews to deny myself the opportunity to try a whisky of interest.
