Tell us your guilty pleasure

Tell us your guilty pleasure

Postby Smithford » 30 May 2012, 16:28

OK. I know we all come here to talk the talk about the high-end, super premium whiskies we love. A lot of us think nothing of dropping a hundred bucks or two on a bottle. But probably, we all have our guilty pleasures too. You know, the cheap and cheerful stuff we love but we'd never go brag about on an online forum. ;)

So, how about it? Like to kick back with a Laker on the weekend? Sip fruity coolers with a straw when no one's looking? Got a case of cheap Chilean white stowed away up at the cottage? Whether your secret is cheap or cheesy, we need to hear about it. :)

I'll start.

Skinnygirl Margarita. I love Mexican food, and I love margaritas (rocks margaritas, not that slushy stuff). Believe it or not, Skinnygirl Margarita tastes really good - it's hugely quaffable and very refreshing on a hot sunny day. But the marketing makes me feel like I have to buy it in secret. And I can't stand that some cheesy reality TV star gets a royalty from every bottle I buy. I couldn't find a serious review of it anywhere (Esquire's review is hilarious), but the one linked above pretty much sums up my feelings.

 OK, your turn. :P

I like a Southern Comfort with coke and ice when out in the club partying. It's refreshing and it would be waste to buy a malt (if available) because you risk to spill it in the crowd, the price is exorbitant and you have no leisure to nose and sip it in quiet.

Same goes for bacardi coke (cuba libre). Round here you can get a half measure (2cl) of rum with coke for half price, which is called a "Wändli" and it's our favorite pre-football match warm up drink at the pub.

Last weekend I was in Italy and lived off 5yo Glen Grant which was the only single malt at the hotel bar and came in large (ca. 7cl) pours for 5.50 Euros. I loved it :-)

Well all that is nothing to be ashamed of anyway, or is it!

hmmm...I always posting about drinking 40 creek BS and Teacher here without any shame. I mix the cheaper canadian ryes with ginger ale and ice often as well.

My cocktail choice is mojitos with bacardi white rum.

While Im drinking an Amsterdam Blonde lager now (brewery just across the street) I also drink Molson Canadian, Coors Light and even Pabst Blue Ribbon.

I used to enjoy a quiet cherry brandy and rum in a tall glass filled to the brim with ice on a hot sunny afternoon.

there are 2 inexpensive drinks that I love to have and would recommend both of them to whiskey and whisky lovers.

I used to have to go to Quebec or Buffalo for this, but recently the LCBO just started carrying it. It's called Sortilege, and is basically rye mixed with maple syrup. Put an ounce or 2 on ice and it's very drinkable.

Also, there is an old spiced rye that years ago couldn't be found as the distillery shut down I believe. I think the formula was purchased by an American company and is now back on the shelves in the LCBO at a surprise to me last year......it's called Revel Stoke. Either by itself or with a little cola on ice, it's hard to just have one.

The Glenlivet - super inexpensive, great nose, light body, very drinkable on a summer night.

Best I can do is $10 bottles of sauvignon blanc with screwtops...to me, wine is wine.

Okay Smithford. I know I'm gonna take some heat from you for this one, but you're the one that asked. My guilty pleasure is Four Roses Small Batch and Coke Zero. To me it's like having a dessert, or a candy bar. Love to savour it in a whisky tumbler with ice and sip it slowly swishing it in the glass and clanking the cubes. :yummy:

For me it has to be a Dark and Stormy - dark rum with ginger beer. I also don't mind admitting to imbibing the ol' JD and coke once in a while on a night in/out with the lads, though the Dark and Stormy doesn't tend to leave an aftertaste the morning after, which is a definite plus.

You'll get no guff from me for having a sweet tooth. My favorite bourbon accompaniment is a butter tart.

But I am concerned about your aspartame intake. That stuff will kill you long before the booze will!

Well if it is, then I confess this as well. No, the GG 5yo is not great whisky and I generally use it as a warm up for much more flavorful drams, but it seems to me the taste has improved over the last five years.

At my house, we're now at the point where if I buy wine that doesn't come with a screwtop, my girlfriend complains. Fiddling with the corkscrew gets in the way of her instant gratification.

BTW, I'm loving the unexpected international participation in this thread.
