Spitfire Ale - The Bottle of Britain?

Spitfire Ale - The Bottle of Britain?

Postby Malt-Teaser » 19 Nov 2010, 09:13

My local British shop ordered some of this specially for a customer and I ssaw it for the first time yesterday, but sadly they didn't have sense to order more than the few bottles for this customer so there were no spares for the shelves or for me to try

Anyone tried it?
Is it any good?
Am I just years behind everyone else in never having heard of it before?

I rember having seen it (but not drunk) when I was in England some 15 years ago. At that time they were advertising it with "Goering, Goering, Gone!" The WW2 obsession of the Brits never ceases to amaze me.

they havn't changed their advertising much in the last 15 years, still based on taking the mick out of the war and germany, i reckon its about time they got over it..

Spitfire has been around a very long time. Sheherd Neame brewery in Kent. When I lived in Kent I drank it often, on draught - very good it was too.
Not as good in bottles - but then what beer is.

Nice but not a favourite.

Well, so it was for the French, the Americans and many more. Strangely enough only UK media still seem to cling to it. Could be a nice topic for a seminar on collective psychology, but I digress... ;)

Shepherd Neame is pretty much my local brewery, and Spitfire is probably it's best known expression. I concur with Nick - sometimes fantastic on draught and not quite so good in bottles - but a lovely, proper, Kentish beer none the less.
I feel no pain dear mother now
But oh, I am so dry!
O take me to the distillery
And leave me there to die.

Favourite Whiskies: At this very moment - Glendronach 12 - still enjoying old favourites Glenlivet "Nadurra" and Talisker 57N. Absolutely loving Old Pulteney 17 and missing the recently emptied Ardbeg Uigeadail. Highland Park "Leif Eriksson" is very good.

Some years back I used to frequent a bar which boasted a lot of different beers. After having tried many of them, I always stuck to the Spitfire. An excellent red ale (and this is a lager-lover speaking :) )

It's the war that crippled Britain for good. The Brits couldn't afford to hold on to what was left of the Empire and it crumbled. We put our necks on the line and lost our head for it, we lost everything, so we hang on to the moral victory of it, and have to remind those that conveniently forget.

I think this sums up pretty well what I was alluding to. And what's more: Germany lost the war but still managed to surpass the UK economy wise. Yet another reason to remember the "good old days"...

But anyway, it's a pity that I haven't tried the spitfire then. Should be pretty decent after all what has been said.

What a coincidence... On a supermarket shelf in Munich I found the Spitfire yesterday. Of course I bought a bottle an tried it. It's really quite good and pretty flavoursome for only 4.5% alcohol.

There's also Thwaites Lancaster Bomber. Possibly a beer you wouldn't find in Germany, especially not Hamburg or Dresden.

I never really liked the Spitfire Ale, and I am a real ale drinker, I prefer the modern IPA style which seems so popular these days.

I like ales like Fuller's Porter, Pride and ESB, together with St. Austell when it comes to english ales

My list of prefered scottish ales is too long for me to finish before xmas :-)
