Old distilleries in Linlithgow?

Postby an donas » 17 Nov 2011, 22:54

Am well aware of St Mags... however was on the road to Lanark/ Bathgate from Linlithgow yesterday - about a mile west of the West Port - and saw what appeared to be another old distillery turned into housing. Does anyone know anything about this?

My copy of Misako's book hasn't reappeared from the packing after the house move yet, but someone will have a copy that should hopefully contain details of the lost distilleries in the area.

Barnard mentions Bo'ness at Linlithgow; Glenmavis at Bathgate

Neither of those in in the area an donas describes, and Ulf Buxrud says both are entirely demolished.

Possibly a former brewery or other industrial site?

Misako's book lists 18 lost distilleries in the Falkirk area - could well be Bankier, demolished 1981 but warehouses used until the late '80s. AKA Banknock.
Misako's book gives much more detail on this one but little on the other 'unknown' ones.

Would this be on the Mains Road (A706)? If so, then this is the Mains Malting’s, which was part of the Aitken's brewery based in Falkirk. In 1960 it became part of Caledonian United Breweries, which in turn became part of Tennents to form Tennent Caledonian. The brewery closed in the late sixties

This sounds like it. It is the A706. It still has a pagoda like structure and the warehouses look like a typical distillery in passing.

So much lost alcoholic history... :(
