Longmorn/Mortlach/Teaninich

Postby scotchio » 28 Mar 2012, 20:49

It's a bit of a longshot but I figured it worth asking. I'm thinking of picking up one last batch of bottles(yes I know  ) and after painstaking consideration I'm down to these options.I just wanted to know if anyone has had any of these bottlings lately are they on good form( ie unsulphured and generally decent) I've tried to find notes etc from around the web but drawn a blank in terms of anything current.

FF Mortlach 16 43%
GM Longmorn 12 40% or
OB Cask Longmorn 97(14) 59.6%
CC Teaninich 1995(15) 46%

Any views or information much appreciated
thanks in advance

only the mortlach f&f. purchased a year or two ago. no sulphur whatsoever. a lovely easy-drinking whisky.

Of the 4 you listed I've only had the Mortlach, and I love it. But I'm not hyper-sensitive to sulphur nor do I mind a bit of 'good' sulphur (sandy-mineral/leather/matches/flints/tar) in my whisky... the last 08 batch of the Mortlach F&F I tried had no noticable sulphur notes for me though.
But, there are slight batch variations, so might be there are some with noticeable sulphur traces in some.
Also, there's a pretty persistent rumour, or knowledge, I'm not sure as I haven't been to Mortlach and could see/taste for myself (or have it explained so I actually understand the what's & why's...), that their new make is slightly sulphuric on purpose, which is part of it's heavier, more meaty profile...
These sulphur notes of the new make usually get tamed down beyond recognition over the first week in the wood, but still contribute to the general profile.
So you might want to try before you buy if you get a chance.
If you have to buy blind, my choice would be the Mortlach, or maybe the Longmorn (admittedly, that might be the cask strength speaking to me...).

You're right about the natural sulphur in Mortlach. I've had old GM minis which have a proper roasting tin beefy quality which I really like.some of the old GM minis I've had have been incredibly complex. It's the burnt match sherry sulphur I struggle with. My last two 35cl GM Mortlach 15s have been very disappointing so I want to make sure as far as possible that my next Mortlach is a better representation of what I know they can produce.

i've had mortlachs that were sulphurous to varying degrees (though like alec.tron, i am not a sulphur-phobe). my f&f mortlach 16 had no sulphur whatsoever, however, and it wasn't even as heavy/meaty as some.

I didn't enjoy a Mortlach F&F about a year ago. I tried, but it was memorable only as it was so forgettable. Suffered from the kind of sulphur that deadens the whisky and the palate but not so much that it could be 'tasted'. There were times i thought it was an e150 issue, but i'm not sure. It wasn't a sample, but the entire bottle was lifeless to the last dram. I don't have the bottling code unfortunately.

Make of that what you will, but i just don't get the Mortlach 'cult' at all, i remember the disappointment, primarily as i didn't particularly rate the 1st bottle of it i tried a few years prior to that and i was hoping for better.
I've spent a lot of money on whisky and women, the rest i squandered

I'm no great fan of Mortlach or Longmorn but like Teaninich - so for me it would be an easy choice.

I had an earlier batch of the CC Teaninich which was fine. Given the color it must be a refill butt anyway so not that much risk of sulphur as from a first fill I guess. I had a sig. vintage cask strenght collection Teaninich from a refill butt as well which was superb. I like the spicy flavor profile on these Teaninichs from refill butts. Can't speak for the Mortlach and the Longmorn though as I haven't tasted neither.

I'm beginning to think I'll skip the Mortlach and Longmorn and save my pennies. I have a nice stock of 80s Longmorn 12 minis(which are delicious) and I really should force myself to drink the GM Mortlach 15 before I get another Mortlach. I'll probably go for the CC Teaninich as it's nice to have an OB aged marker toget a sense of what a whicky does without too much age /cask influence. Im leaning toward the darker of the two recent Teaninichs from GM. I think someone on here has the other one so maybe they;ll swap a sample with me for the sake of comparison. I'll complete my order with what looks like a good Macallan, some Laddie 10 and a GM Imperial 18( which also looks a good refill sherry and is nicely priced for an 18yo from a closed distillery. I quite like the creaminess of Imperial. Teaninich I feel I need to explore. Had some older samples(both excellent) including The Bottlers sherry one so it's time to sample something a bit more bog standard tempting though the Bladnoch 27yo bottling is.

Is this your Longmorn? http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_917357/gordon-macphail-longmorn-12-year-old-scotch-whisky

It's not bad, won't change your world though.

Is the 16yo official bottling of Longmorn any good?

Some time since I had it - I remember it being OK but unspectacular. Honeyed fruity and waxy IIRC.
