Hotels in Edinburgh

Postby Malt-Teaser » 20 Dec 2011, 22:09

I have travelled to and stayed in Glasgae, but I now have the remote possibility to travel to Edinburgh during 2012 and would be looking for somewhere to stay for 2-3, maybe 4 days.

I also have the usual requests for as comfortable as possible with as many amenities as possible for as little (cost) as possible. This should also be as central as possible.

Any recommendations?
Malty

PS If said recommendations came with links to websites so I could have a gander myself, it would be muchly appreciated.

Hi Keith

This November I stayed in this Bed and Breakfast. It is No.1 on tripadvisor and it was extremely more valuable for money than anything else I have experienced in Edinburgh

http://www.edinburghsgrousehouse.co.uk/

We payed 60£ for a twin room double oocupancy, I think it was winter rate but I am not sure. Home made breakfast like in the country side...

Not sure if the value for money is as good if rooms are rented as singles but its very recommended to everybody

Not often stayed in Mbru hotels but the Hotel Du Vin was a good place to eat/drink and super central, it occupies some of the buildings that used to be 'Bedlam' where the poet Robert Ferguson was interned -he was an inspiration to Robert Burns: mind you a cheap night can be had in some of the toon's hostels and such- plenty 'atmosphere' compared to the Travelodges.

Steffen,
that looks good but is possibly a little over my budget although it has given me more ideas and I have found various good websites to check now.

Jolly,
Wow, what a place, exactly my taste but sadly, way, way over my budget. The days of me affording places like that are now a good few years behind me

I haven't stayed in either of these, so can't really vouch, but both were on my radar at one time:

If those are over your budget, you are probably looking at B&B. I'm not sure what you are looking for in the way of amenities, but I can tell you that the places I usually stay, for £30-35, are pretty basic, and not really central.

You could try the Premier Inn group of hotels. If you book well in advance they offer very good rates.

A few years ago we stayed in edinburgh here: http://www.elderyork.co.uk/

The royal mile was a 5-minute walk away. And pretty cheap too. Don't expect luxury of course, but everything was clean. And he has some whiskies to taste also, don't know what it was tho, cause I wasn't into the bloody stuff yet. Could be blends, could be malts... Dunno.

Well, I'm still looking but things don't look to be too difficult, it's just a matter of finding the best option for me.

I thought I'd found the ideal place earlier this morning when I looked at a hotel website for a place on Princes Street. It is a hotel, not B&B .. etc.

Basically, depending upon my flight dates the minimum I would need is a room for two nights, although I could possibly stretch to two or three more if the price is right.

Anyway, the hotel in question quoted me a mere 50 GBP plus 4-95 for breakfast for the first of my nights, but exactly double the price for my second night.

I sent them an e-mail enquiry and their reply quoted me almost 150 GBP for each night :-o (plus breakfast).
I went back to the website to check again and guess what?
All prices have been increased in the 3 hours since I first enquired.

Oh well, I'm still looking but am finding various options although it will probably mean no more than 2, maybe three nights in total.

Well, I'm now receiving replies to my enquiries and at the moment it looks like I'll be choosing between these four options:

1. Bruntsfield Hotel, I've been offered an excellent price for this 4* Hotel http://www.thebruntsfield.co.uk/

2. The Walton http://www.scottishaccommodationindex.com/accommodation_edinburgh/waltonhotel.php G'night John-Boy

3. One Royal Circus http://www.scottishaccommodationindex.com/accommodation_edinburgh/oneroyalcircus.php

4. A B&B someone recommended http://www.guest-houses-edinburgh.com/about_rooms.php

If anyone knows any of these places and can recommend (or not) them, please let me know here.

Everything now booked and I chose my option 3 above which is 1 Royal Circus.

I already have an excellent impression of them as my booking is a little complicated and was made via a booking website, as the hotel itself directs bookings there.
Anyway, I received a very friendly e-mail last night asking about the exact dates of my stay as something appeared to be confuddled.
All I can say is excellent and friendly service so far in ensuring that no mistakes were made.
