First Bottle

Postby Bigmellow68 » 18 Apr 2013, 14:01

Hello all,

My first post, and recently got a new job so to celebrate wanted to get a new bottle. Nothing too pricey, but something good for someone who is new to whisky. I don't have any preferences at this point, perhaps a good single malt!

Thanks!

Welcome, 3 good choices from mongo, I would add
Auchentoshan three wood,
Glenfiddich 15,
It does depend on how much you want to spend ? Also what is available in your area,
Slightly more money but the balvenie Caribbean is a very nice dram or Glenfarclas 15, let us know what you get..

Ended up with the Auchentoshan three wood. I like it but seems to have more of a burn then others I tried? Is a heavy burn indicitve of a cheaper whisky, or an inexperienced palette?

Excited bout my first bottle. Do you guys keep the boxes or just the bottles?

When you are newer to it, I suggest to keep whiskies in the box as long as you can if you like doing it. There is a romanticism in opening that box to get your bottle out and pouring a glass. Over time you might think its just another barrier between you and the whisky, then its time to just put the extra packaging in the recycling after you open bottles.

I should think this would be a fairly tame whisky--I'm guessing that it's a matter of what you are used to. We all went through it. Trying adding a bit of water, a very little bit. The goal is to find the smallest amount of water that allows you to enjoy the whisky without burn. After a while, you'll get acclimated, and will be enjoying cask-strangth drams neat, like the rest of us. But you will also find that small amounts of water cause some interesting changes in the whisky. Many here add a drop or two or three for this reason, rather than for any need to cut the strength.

i think in that particular case it is indicative of the whisky being very young and the wood too assertive.

Hi Big Mellow. I hope you have a nice journey in exploring whisky. The burn will get away if you get used to sipping tiny doses and also adding the odd drop or splash of water, until it suits you. I drink cask strenght whiskies now and if done with caution the burn is not disturbing. If it is, water is the trick. ;D

I hope you enjoy your choice, in my humble opinion you made a good one, the threewood is a good every day drink, try it with a very small amount of water, but in time I'm sure you will enjoy it as is ....

A good point. Try taking in just enough to spread across your tongue in a thin coat, and smear it around your mouth.

For your next bottle after the Three Wood (still waiting for it to come back to Ontario), I would echo Mongo's Highland Park 12 suggestion. I would add though that this bottle, from my own experience and those of several others that I know, may take some time (a couple of months possibly) to fully develop its aroma and flavour profile. In that sense, the HP 12 was a very educational bottle for me, in being able to identify new flavours/changes as they occured from first opening of the bottle, over the course of about 15 months.

Enjoy the journey and don't be a stranger!
The wishlist is always growing...
