need info on bottling

Postby Jolly Toper » 10 Dec 2011, 18:06

I have been asked to sell a bottle but I can't come up with a reasonable price as I'm unsure of the exact nature of the dram.

It is 'Speyside" produced by Speyside Distillery & Bonding Co Ltd

imported to Bologna '43 degrees' '750cc'

George Christie was in warehousing and brokering before bottling then distilling. His Speyside distillery first produced in 1990 but his North of Scotland (aka Strathmore until 1964 I believe) operated from 1958 to 1980. Initially producing malt in Column stills then grain from 1960. There may have been malt made in potstill originally too.

The bottle does not state age, vintage or designation - blend, malt etc.

Any ideas?

The Vadiz collection at The Whisky Experience as a couple of similar but different bottlings.

Any wisdom out there? It could be exquisitely rare or mundane. Ponder.

Hi there,

well there is one date that seems pretty fixed: production or rather distilling at Speyside distillery started on 3rd December 1990.

Sorry to ask the obvious: do you have a bottling code on the bottle?

On the other hand, this could be misleading as something is nagging at the back of my mind

that "Speyside" labeled whisky not in the sense of a region but as a distillery name

was sold before the distillery was even completely build.

Not sure though where I picked that up or if it is true.

Greetings

edit: There were blends and vatted (blended) malts sold under the name of Speyside and they offered a 17yo Glentromie with "The Speyside" imprinted into the glass of the bottle. At that time it could not have been distilled at the new distillery.

That's what I think too. As I recall the bottle is a dumpy style with coloured glass. Couldn't say what's in it though.

Thanks guys, The bottling, I suspect. is quite old- predating the bulbous 'Speyside's at 21 and 30yo. But has the same generous 'The best whisky in the world' tag. Somebody better tell Mr Murray. So definetly not from the eponymous distillery, perhaps 1980s bottling - maybe even earlier, no importer name, not volume stated, quite a conundrum.
