Glenugie 32 'Deoch an Doras'

Postby whiskyone » 18 Feb 2012, 20:42

I decided today, I should treat myself to something nice.

I've sort of got my eyes fixed on a bottle of 'Deoch an Doras' Glenugie 32 Year old. It's a toss up between this and a Brora 32 yo. By my usual standards, this is way to much money to pay for a bottle of scotch. If this were someone asking me, i'd be screaming leave it where it is, you can get this that and the other for half the price, but the gremlins have taken me over you see.....twitch.....twitch.

I just want to know if any of you fellas' have experienced this whisky, and what you make of it. Someone talk me out of it.

Not tried that one.Too rich for my blood but I've had quite a few Glenugies and cant think of any I didnt enjoy.Fruity with a hint of plasticine is generally the distillery character.

I've got one in my collection, still owe the boss for it...., no direct experience of it though- too expensive to open for a tasting- I struggled to think it will be as significantly better than than another expression which will be significantly cheasper- the SMWS bottling that yielded less than 100 bottles was a stotter. In a bar this will be well expensive if you could actually find a pub/hotel that stocked it- surely someone has it. Unfortunately the only people I know that tried it, some Aberdonian whisky fans, tell me it was underwhelming.

I was hoping the next release in this range would include some of the extra-rare malts Chivas own the trade mark to but for some reason I believe the next round was a repeat of the first. Would Ian Logan please pick up the phone...

On the subject I recall TWE saying this was the first official release of a Glenugie since an extremely rare bottling many moons ago - can anyone confirm this? Tim?

When this bottling came out they thought it was the first OB release of Glenugie, until someone discovered there was a very young (5yo?) released in the 70's or so for some market, that everybody more or less forgot about

Aye sorry  The correct answer would be to track down a good indi bottling if you can and save a few pennies.

Jim Murray raves about a couple of IBs of "Glenugie". I've also heard it talked up by other 'professionals'. Yet, apart from the recent expensive OB by Chivas, it seems 'off the radar' for most people.

I've got the last two SMWS bottlings, but haven't opened them yet.

Last time I was in Loch Fyne I tried a Signatory Glenugie and have to say it was superb.

Was that one of the ones switched to a sherry cask?
Glenugie is getting pretty scarce and expensive. Was very much on the radar a few years back when Duncan Taylor's and Laings put out a number of excellent bottlings for around £60 a pop.

I'm not sure mate. It was certainly very good though. I bought a Rare Ayrshire (Ladyburn) instead.

I'm quite a fan of Glenugie. In fact, it's one of my favourites. That's why I was interested to know if this one was any good. Although I doubt i'll be getting it now, as I treated myself to a Port Ellen instead after.

I was lucky enough to try one a little while back, and bought two bottles of it. IMO, it's absolutely wonderful stuff. Vastly underrated.

I've had quite a few Glenugie's. The two I have left now are 33yo Cask Strength Signatory's. Lovely stuff. One bottle is nearly empty  , but the other is still in waiting for that special moment. :yummy:

Got an unopened bottle of the SMWS 99.13. Is that the 'stotter' and what does that mean? Good I hope :)

WC : a 'stotter' is the same as a 'bobbydazler'. The one I tried from the SMWS was a very low yield = around a 100 bottles maybe, and bottled early last year I think, I've had mixed reports on the Deoch an Doris, I think there were two releases too.
