Port Ellen 22yo Rare Malts

Postby whiskyone » 19 Feb 2012, 20:48

As I mentioned in my last post, I was determined to treat myself to something nice. I narrowed the criteria down to a Glenugie, or Brora 32yo.

Well, after much deliberation and timewasting, I dived in head first and bought myself a Rare Malts Port Ellen 22yo. .

Almost feel disillusioned enough with the entire world to say what the hell and uncork the beauty when she gets here, but will I have the nerve though, when she's actually there in front of me ?............... Probably not. I'm such a coward

I've heard this is supposed to be quite a good un'. Though I could be wrong ?

I had it off of Fleabay earlier this afternoon. I'm surprised someone else here wasn't bidding on it aswell.

£301 Including postage. Too much, but reasonable I suppose, compared to what i've seen it go for and for what some shops are asking for it.

There's the very first OB 20 year old too, but that one seems to go for a bit less.

The seller also had a St Magdelane 19yo, that went for £240. Only I missed it

I sort of talked myself out of the Glenugie after.

I looked at the Brora 32yo, and decided this probably had a little more intrinsic quality, rather than a price based slightly more around a higher age statement, and contemporary "Diageous" (To coin a phrase) grandeur.

I'm sure the Brora 32yo is a fine whisky, but from what I've read online, and with my limited experience of expensive whisky. The earlier releases tend to be the best.

If I do end up hoarding this like a right swine. I can see this doing better over the coming years (Though I could be wrong), than the Brora. For some reason, I get the impression Port Ellen's have slightly more collectability about them than Brora, even though Brora stocks are probably a fair bit lower. Perhaps it's probably down to the Islay factor.

Also, you have to take into account, a fair amount of this particular bottling was probably drank, due to the lower price at the time 10 or more years ago (As you said Jolly), in comparison to the newer bottlings which are more directed towards collectors.

60.5%? I have one of those buried somewhere around the Midden Heap...bought it at G&M in '05. Don't know what I paid.

I perceive them to be about the same. The Rare Malt Broras cost an arm and a leg, just like the PEs.

I know there is one Rare malt Brora (Forget which one), that costs a small fortune.

I myself consider them to be roughly the same. Although, taking into consideration the Annual releases aswell. Port Ellen's (IMO) tend to attract a little more attention at this moment in time. I notice they seem to sell out quicker than most upon release aswell. Not only that, i've noticed that some people seem to be happy to pay £100-£200 on top of the retail price within months of them be released and selling out, whereas the latest Brora's tend to be a little slower. Although it wouldn't surprise me if things swung in the other direction.

From a purely preferential angle, where money and value doesn't come into the equation. Given a choice of a Brora or PE, of similar quality. I'd most likely choose Brora.

I always preferred the 20yo myself - and when I look on ebay I see one there at £420 BIN - rather more than the 22yo you bought.
I no longer have a 22yo, but I still have a 20yo in reserve :)

I see the one you mean. That's BIN though. I bid for mine, and the ad wasn't listed very well either, so that didn't do much for the price.

If you look at the completed listings. The 20yo almost always sells for less than the 22yo. Also, if you look at the online retailers who stock both. They generally ask £25-£50 more for the 22yo.
