Your favorite orange liqueur?

Postby Call me Jane » 19 Jul 2010, 20:44

I've only tried Cointreau, Prunier's Liqueur D'orange, Mandarine Napoleon, and another which is very common but I can't recall right now. *bonk*

I really like Mandarine Napoleon, even though it's made from tangerines instead of oranges. It's my fave for mixing and making in the kitchen. And probably after that like Cointreau.

Would like to try some other brands though. So do you have a recommendation?

Grand Marnier. Can't say that I like it because all these are too sickly sweet but it's the most famous.

Grand Marnier is made from Cognac and bitter oranges, the orange influence is subtle. Curaçao is also made from bitter oranges, triple sec ( colourless ), also 'blue', red, yellow and orange coloured styles are common ( the orange coloured one is the dry ( or at least less sweet) one ). Another i know of is Van der Hum, made in S. Africa also from a type of bitter orange.

Grand Marnier is the least sweet iirc. The Mrs used to love B52s. As for the general orange, i'm not sure if its used much, mainly the bitter varieties.

Rum Tree springs to mind, i cant remember if it's orange, lemon or grapefruit or all three.

Still too sweet for me. The only orange liquor I like is Glenmorangie :D

I can't find Rum Tree, but since I like tangerine the mixture with grapefruit and others might be really good. And Grand Marnier is what I was thinking of but couldn't place the name.

Yes they are all sweet or seem to be. I would not drink these on their own, maybe just a taste here and there. But mostly I'd use for flavoring chocolate desserts, truffles, and for mixing cocktails or macerating fruits. Mmmm.

Also I don't think I'll ever buy curacao or triple sec again. I'd rather use something else.

At a recent festival I tried Compass Box's Orangerie, I found it to be very nice but a little to expensive to buy if only mixing it in my opinion. Here is what it says on the website about it:

"Orangerie is made from smooth, sweet Scotch whisky infused with the hand-zested peel of Navalino oranges and subtle accents of Indonesia cassia bark and Sri Lankan cloves.

To make Orangerie we begin with great whisky. We use a soft, sweet blend of Highland single malt and single grain whisky from Fife. Secondly, we use only the freshest, highest quality oranges and top class aromatic spices. Importantly, we zest the fruit by hand and use only fresh zest in our infusion. Only the hand-zested peel of really fresh Navalino oranges gives you the lively, vibrant flavours that are the hallmark of Orangerie."
:yummy:
In my opinion...
