What the #%&* ???

Postby Lawrence » 07 Apr 2012, 02:53

Has the whole world gone mad or is it merely the WB pricing? A PC 9yo 500ml for £149.99? The are offering a 37yo Berry's Glen Grant for £141 so im opting for the world has gone mad.

An expensive winebarrel is used to ace it! This is really exclusive stuff you know!

TWB do this with bottlings that are 'collectable' or no longer available. They are notoriously expensive for rarities. See the Feis Ile Lagavulins for example:

On the other hand some of the new bottlings are reasonably priced.

Happens a lot where I live. Last bottles of peacock were sold for 140£ ish as example. Haxelburn first edition is available at 1400£

The ACEing was enough to scare me me away, I didnt have to look at the price :-)

This is The Whisky Barrel MO. They have pioneered the overpriced whisky specialist way of operating. I remember negotiating the price of a bottle of Karuizawa Noh with a seller, i wanted to pay £130, he wanted £160, then he says "i'll just check what WB has it for". It wasn't the first time he mentioned WB's prices (he was becoming obsessed in fact), needless to say he doubled his asking price in the middle of a phone call and i wasn't impressed, i haven't purchased from him since, and to myself, WB is nothing more than a source of morbid amusement.
I've spent a lot of money on whisky and women, the rest i squandered

I had a seller do that to me once as well. Needless to say I told them where they could relocate the item and have never used them again.

Well normally if you want a Laddie Valinch you have to buy a ticket to Islay and go get it yourselves for 60 quid. 80 quid markup for those too lazy to move their behinds to the Island is not that expensive if compared to a flight to Scotland and the Calmac from Kennacraig :D

Islay does have an airport, you know...

Anyway, I understood that the distillery kept these bottlings in industrial quantities for anyone who wanted to pay by credit card and they store them for customers until they show up to collect all their Valinches. I think this was most common in the pokemon era when people gotta collect em all. I imagine it has calmed down now these no longer sell for much money in auction.

I spotted a 1959 Glenmoray in the duthies range in a shop but the bottle could only be retrieved by ladders as it was on a very high shelf - I couldn't read the tiny price tag. I haven't got a Duthies in my collection nor anything from the 1950s, I used to live very close to the distillery and my great Grandfather worked there - I wanted it. But the seller on retrieving the bottle scrunched up the pricetag and said it was wrong - I walked out and haven't bought there since. Boo.

If I was going to do that I'd tell you all the name of the guy who stole two bottles from my latest charity tasting.

Some of the pricing is truly staggering. The 2009 Feis Ile Bowmore is available for £179.99. Go on Bowmore's own website, and its available in the online shop for £93.00.

Nigh on double the price compared to the distillery's own site. Baffling.
