Although it isn't to my taste, Ardbeg is generally regarded as a 'top notch' distillery. It also has relatively low output, so presumably finds little trouble selling its production.

So, why all of these cheap gimmicks (eg win a poster)? They're tacky?

Perhaps they have little trouble selling their product and are generally regarded as "top notch" BECAUSE of all the cheap gimmicks - errr I mean marketing - "tacky" and/or otherwise ;)

No, I don't buy into that argument. A lot of drinkers that I know buy bottle after bottle of "Ardbeg". They don't do that because of marketing (whether good, bad or indifferent). Rather, because they consider it to be a first class dram. So, why are all of the cheap stunts needed? Some of the crap that they come up with must make the distillery's workers blush.
