London - Whisky and other stuff

Postby Peat Sampras » 24 Apr 2012, 20:10

Fellows, I will be in London from 13 through 18 May. I would be grateful for your advice on what is worth checking out in your opinion, whiskywise and else....

Thanks for your input!

I'm a big fan of TWE shop in Vinopolis. Knowledgeable, nice staff, often willing to let you sample (if you intend on buying), and a pretty good selection in-store. If you wanted something special I'd contact them in advance and have them make sure it's in stock while you're there. There are plenty of other whisky shops in London as well, TWE just happens to be my favourite.

With regards to bars, there's the Albannach in Trafalgar Square which is easy to get to and has a good selection of the mainstream OB whiskies. There's also the whisky bar at Canary Wharf (Boisdale) which is quite expensive but has a huge selection including some IB stuff.

As for other stuff, have you been to London before? If not, there's enough standard touristy stuff to keep you busy for five days, no problem. Museums, historical sites, plays, etc. If you've been a few times and done all that already, it really depends on what you like doing.

Thanks Steffen and Ca_aok. I've been there twice before so know the major tourist attractions. So far, I have booked a table at the Ivy, will go have afternoon tea at least once, visit the SMWS London branch and most def. check out TWE. Shopping and sightseeing are also scheduled.

I am interested in good restaurants, whisky shops, shopping in general and sightseeing and just your personal favorite stuff to do there, it does not matter if it is mainstream or off the trodden path, just fire ahead and I'll pick the best stuff. I am not really into museums or musicals but if there is some you can recommend for a reason, I may reconsider even that :D Ah, and a decent chippy would be nice as well :)

Ta!

fyi, I am staying at Princes Square in Bayswater, so I am looking for nice pubs round that area in particular for evening pints and/or drams. :geek:

I like the area just around the TWE vinopolis as well, there's a great market just under the bridge

There's a pub called the Prince Edward in the area that's pretty good if I recall correctly. Decent selection of real ales, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. I've always stayed either up near King's Cross or closer to Covent Garden though, so I'm not as familiar with the area.

One of my favourites if you like Belgian beer is called the Lowlander Cafe. They've got a decent selection of Trappist ales and other offerings.

As for restaurants, I tend to just as the concierge for a decent Indian or Thai place. For something cheaper and less fancy, there's a chain of burger restaurants around town called Byron Burger, and they make a pretty good burger. Decent bottled beer selection too, mostly random microbrew/craft beer. They've got 10-12 types of lower end bourbon if that's your thing too.
