1001 Whiskies..... Out this month.

If this paperback is anything like its "1001 Wines...." stable mate, it'll be a weighty tome to be sure.

Jim Murray and tumblers on the label...

Well sometimes they make it easy which books not to consider...

(Considering writing 5001 whiskies to try before you die, but I can only remember 4 of the 5 I didn't like)

It will be hardback on release. Released at almost the same time - and with almost the same name - but in paperback is this one.

More off putting than Jim Murray's name (who is an entertaining writer) is that of Roskrow, the literary equivalent of watching paint dry.

Let's be fair--the whole "umpty-and-one things to do before you die" thing appears to be public domain, and pretty ubiquitous. Ian wasn't being particularly original in the first place.

I don't really understand this concept. Why should it be 1001? Why not 1234? or 56789? or 666? or 3 (although that would be a very short book)? Are there only 1001 whiskies worth tasting? Why should I believe the author? I must admit I find the "n+1 things to do before you die" type of books mildly irritating. But perhaps the contents are engagingly written....
I must remember to forget....

I have never heard of this series; 1001 beers, 1001 wines, 1001 albums etc, prior to today. There appears to be dozens of titles...

Well, true. But in the whisky world Ian was the first with this title AFAIK. I'm happy to be proved wrong and then castigate Ian of course :)

There was a danish book out a few years back which titles translates into

50 whiskyer you should taste before you die

http://www.saxo.com/dk/50-whiskyer-du-s ... escription

There seem to be one rule, you have to inflate the numbers

The 50 list isn't particular a list of super high-quality whiskies, but more a list of good OB's

My list would be of some whiskies you should try before they "die", not you

Like

Ardbeg Provenance
Laphroaig 21
Glen Garioch 29
Old style old Bowmore
Port Ellen
72 Brora
72 Caperdonich
Pappy van Winkle 20
AH Hirsch 16

etc. etc etc, you can probably add one or two yourself but I am sure you know what I mean

I got the book yesterday. Sure it contains every whisky you can think of. I am going to die before I taste all of them, that's for sure. Some good info about the bottles, though.

I'm now wondering about the possibility of an alternate version along the lines of .......

n whiskies not to try before you die

It may be a short book, maybe even only a leaflet, but I'm sure Loch Dh-Ugly would be given a starring role

the Loch Dhu actually made it into the 1001 wttbyd book discussed in this thread, as far as I can tell from the sample pages available on amazon, Aidan can probably confirm.

This isn't a rip-off of Ian Buxton's "101..." concept. The "1001..." book series has been around for years and years (the wine one and the beer one are in my local Waterstone's just now).

Talking of Ian Buxton though, I think that he's going to publish a second "101..." (or perhaps 102-202), with the focus on world whiskies.

With a good lawyer, Ian Buxton could possibly still win a big cash settlement over this. I mean a really good lawyer like Lionel Hutz:

“Mr. Simpson, the state bar forbids me from promising you a big cash settlement. But just between you and me, I promise you a big cash settlement.” – Lionel Hutz

10^x + 1 is shorthand for 'everything' for those who need their fingers for counting. They believe they get 1 extra for free and think that the 10^y - 1 price is almost 10 times less than the actual price.

Maybe we could collectively write a 10^x + 1 better die than try whiskies and buy a cask or two of the proceeds.
