What Brands of Coffee do we drink?

Postby MaltLover » 13 Feb 2009, 03:01

Some of you may remember this Topic on another forum? So I thought I might reintroduce it here? Interesting How we drink different coffees from around the world? I know many people like to make coffee in the French Press I have one but don't use it much? I mostly use the instant coffees! yeah I know? can't really appreciate the coffee! but it's easy and not much to wash up.

Lets us know what you drink? how you make it? and any machines you have for Coffee?

Staying Canadian, I drink this when Im put and about:

Image

I prefer others like the Second Cup but this does the trick.

At home its grinding up this:

It costs about $15 for a pound of beans, around $12 on sale.

I rarely drink coffee, but if I'm on my way to work and get a notion for one then I buy from this company:

Their coffee is better and cheaper than the Starbucks stand beside them in the station.

I tend to keep a couple of types on hand as much as possible.
1) a standard run of the mill dark French Roast (Allegro)
2) a light roast (whatever regional/seasonal beans they have at my grocery store, usually also Allegro)
3) some nice Kona beans. I get these from here. I used to be able to find this brand locally but now I'm stuck ordering online. It's really good stuff.

I brew using a French press and although I've been experimenting for a few years, I'm still refining my technique. I mix and match the beans when I grind and brew, usually two parts dark roast and one part light roast. The light roasts tend to have more interesting/characteristic flavors, but are difficult to brew in a press pot since if you leave them steeping for even a few extra seconds, the coffee gets way too acidic. The the darker roasts are much more forgiving. I think they balance each other out very nicely.

Brewed on their own, the lighter roasts need 2-3 minutes. The darker roasts can go for 5. The 2:1 mix I steep for about 4 minutes. Sometimes it works and the coffee is magical. Sometimes it's mediocre. More good results than bad. Someday I'll perfect it. If I'm feeling particularly attentive I'll stand by the press pot as it steeps and wait for about half of the grinds to sink to the bottom, which is a good indicator that it's ready.

When I'm using the espresso machine I generally use Lavazza.
For a cacetiere I use Hawaiian Kona when I can get it. If not I get whatever takes my fancy

My coffee comes from Valvona and Crolla - an Italian delicatessen of long standing in Edinburgh. They weigh the beans and grind them for you - hence no fancy packaging to show.

Mainly Early Grey Tea, from the lady next door who owns the local tea shop, as I don't drink coffee.

Café Britt (www.cafebritt.com) is a truly outstanding coffee from Costa Rica. I order it on-line and it arrives in 3-4 days. I prefer the Costa Rican dark roast for my drip coffee maker or my French Press, and the espresso beans for my espresso maker. (While you can order either whole beans or ground, I prefer to grind my beans daily.)

Enjoy.

Don't really enjoy "water coffee", but love a good espresso! When I am making them at home I use these beans. Have been using them for a few years now, and nothing seems to beat them. :)

I usually buy whole coffee beans and grind them myself

As with whisky I try different countries products, and have even on occasions bought some of the more expensive ones like Blue Mountain from jamaica or Kopi Luwak

My favourite daily coffee is Peter Larsen Organic and Peter Larsen Ethiopian beans

I drink the best I know in Ontario: Detour Coffee. Their dry processed Yirgacheffe was legendary!

Kopi luwak is very interesting, although I am not sure I like the taste as much as the story/origins that go along with it. Another interesting one is Monkey Parchment coffee (beans which have been chewed by Rhesus Monkeys), to me this had a much richer taste than the kopi luwak.

Looks like they have some very interesting offerings. Would love to give the darkhorse blend a try. Have heard nothing but good about the coffee offered at darkhorse, but they are a bit too far away to try in person.

At home, we use a standard drip-filter coffee machine. I only purchase beans (usually from Brulerie St-Denis), and freshly grind as needed using a DeLonghi burr grinder. We're fairly eclectic in terms of the provenance of the coffees. However, a longtime favourite 'house-blend' of ours consists of 60% Tanzanian Peaberry, 30% Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and 10% Yemen Mocha Mattari. Otherwise, we tend towards Nicaraguan, Costa Rican, Sumatran Gayo Mountain and the odd purchase of Italian expresso beans.

When out and about, we gravitate towards specialty coffee bars.

Tim Horton's provides a good hit when we're on the road.

You can order Detour beans online, if you're interested. Darkhorse is very, very good, and if you have a chance to visit, I highly recommend it. While in TO, you might also want to check out Sam James Coffee Bar before you drive down to Dundas and try Detour straight from the source. ;)

i can't speak too highly about coleman coffee. You can pick them up from Maltby Street Market. Tried it black yesterday and now with cream, and each time it's been special (the Malawi one). I wish I had some Hazelburn left or the '76 Dalmore I had. Nevermind. Glenlivet 12 is decent enough.

Trung Nguyen, a vietnamese coffee, particularly the Creative 4 blend. I usually prepare it as ca phe sua da, drip filtered in a single serve phin filter over sweetened condensed milk and stirred into ice.

Tim Horton's is my usual when I don't want to make something from home. At home, Folgers is not a bad mass produced coffee offering. My 'specialty' stock is Aroma Nica, a medium roast, Costa Rican, offering that is 'beyond Fair Trade'. Hasbean's, the specialty retailer at the Covent Garden Market in London (Ontario), buys this bean directly from the harvester so that even more of the profits go directly to the farmer, compared to Fair Trade coffees that (I believe, IIRC) see some proceeds go to the Fair Trade organization, before getting to the farmer. Oh, and it's very enjoyable coffee as well. :)
The wishlist is always growing...

I love coffee - I make it using the "pour-over" method, directly into an insulated carafe. I'm picky when it comes to coffee - always grind my own beans, etc. Lately I've been drinking "Cameron's" brand. I don't drink flavored coffee but I really like their Organic French Roast & Intense French Roast. I buy them at Amazon. They are a Minnesota company I think...& don't ship internationally exception being Canada.

Another good coffee roaster is "Intelligentsia" - I like every coffee I've had from them. They are a Chicago, IL roaster but have a roasting facility in LA, CA now too.

I get mine mostly from GoCoffee or HasBean. But I get different stuff all the time. Still searching for the one I want as a regular and I guess that, just like whisky, I'll end up with some favourites but still buy different things all the time.

Only I won't be able to accumulate coffee because it'll have to be drunk quickly

Yesterday I got a delivery of "Kicking Horse"- Kick Ass Dark Roast Coffee. Very good coffee!! You Canadians are lucky - it's roasted in British Columbia but I can get it from Amazon. It's the first one I've tried from this roaster - think I'm going to order the "454 Horse Power Dark" next.
