Nose: Um, peaty. Also a touch rubbery, with a little eucalyptus and honey. Faintly spirity. A little smoke here too. Peppery and something slightly burnt/sulphurous (matchstick). Quite sweet, but that's presumably due to the alcohol. A tiny amount of butyric acid? Also fairly salty. Something fruity too, but I can't say what. Very bitter dark chocolate (the 99% cocoa stuff). Also some fish. Very smooth for its ABV, and doesn't behave like young whisky (very few new spirit notes, for example). With water, bigger fruity and chocolaty (good-quality milk chocolate) notes appear and the raw peat subsides, though it's obviously still present. Becomes a little minty too. Too much water makes it soapy.
Palate: Yep, it's peaty alright, but also fairly fruity. A little rubber here as well, and it becomes a little cheek-drying. Very fizzy after a few seconds, and hurts the tongue after a few more! Water please... ok, the immediate whack of peat is dulled and it becomes more rubbery and smoother, but it still hurts the tongue a little! Not much more is revealed. Again, becomes too soapy if too much water is added.
Finish: Powerful! Peaty, earthy, smoky and then huge notes of... paint? Or is it white spirit? Yes, something akin to white spirit! Becomes more fruity after a few seconds, but the peat lingers for a while. Also notes of steriliser (baby-bottle, home-brew wine barrel etc). Water just delays the appearance of the white spirit-ish note.
This is a real eye opener. At 40ppm it's peaty, but not quite as much as I was expecting. The nose is fantastic, really complex for a six-year-old and surprisingly balanced. The palate is quite simple in comparison, but extremely drinkable. The finish is odd, with the big white spirit-ish note slightly worrying from a first-taste point of view, but somehow it works once you know it's coming. Can take a lot of water, though obviously the raw power disappears.
