The Whisky Apocalypse

Postby Captain John » 18 May 2009, 01:54

This is mine and a friends attempt to encourage younger drinkers into the fold, it's aimed at people who are into whisky but are perhaps a bit intimidated by it all but fancy learning a wee bit. The monthly meet ups (Two so far, but it's a new thing) are aimed at tasting new things as well as going through the different tastes and smells of our national drink.

I'm aware through looking at this site that people on here are far more experienced in the world of whisky and might not wish to attend any event involving me talking rubbish about whisky but if anyone fancies coming along to the next gathering (end of May. start of June) feel free to pop along.

The website is reguarly updated with small bits of general "beginners knowledge" as well as a malt of the month and info on upcoming meets.

The Captain.

Oh and yes were into gaming too, but we're kinda moving away from that into a general whisky thing.

Hi Cap'n, that site's a good idea which I am sure will help you spread the word, however, I see your "blends often incorporate grain whisky" and I think you should change this to say they do incorporate grain whisky.

If there's no grain whisky it is a vatted not blended whisky.
I also thought that some blends can include up to 100 or more different malts, but I may be mistaken here.

Keep up the good work,
Malty

But vatted is so last year!

These days, a blended whisky, according to the SWA, is a whisky that includes the products of more than one distillery - whether all malt, all grain, or a bit of both.

Hi Nick & Apocalypse,

Blended whisky (or blended Scotch whisky) contains at least one grain whisky and malts.

Blended malt whisky contains only malts.

All according to the SWa of course:
http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/swa/45.html

Personally, whether 'last year' or not, I don't like this blended mallarkey for everything, for me blended = grain and malts, vatted = only mlats .. etc.

But of course the SWA must always be right and in this case, I'm pleased to be 'last year' or the proverbial luddite

MT - you're welcome to remain a Luddite. But suggesting that others should change their website when it's perfectly correct is taking flat-earthism a bit far. :)

Sorry Nick, but I thought my (SWA) link above showed that it is still not correct. Albeit in a different way to my original comment.

Blended = grain & malt
Blended Malt = only malts
Blended Grain = Only grains

So, the apocalypse should be changed not to vatted, but to blended malt whisky.

I don't think you're right. The exact categories are:

Blended Scotch Whisky
Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Blended Grain Scotch Whisky

Simply talking about blended whisky could refer to any of these - or even to whisky from outwith these shores.

There's other stuff on the site that I would take issue with, but the use of "blended whiskies" is not one of them.

They seemed to have run out of steam in January of this year; a short lived venture...

Maybe because they invited folk along to their meetings but never said where they were.
