LCBO Bargains & Discontinued Items

Postby Frodo » 13 Aug 2009, 15:46

LCBO currently has Whyte & MacKay 13 on delist offer at $23+. For a 13yr blend I'm stunned. Have tried a couple of bottles and although it isn't anything expressive, it is a well-made blend. Wouldn't exactly call it "mellow" as it does have a personality, but it's not the most boisterous bottle I've ever met. It does go with mild to medium cigars as well I've found as the sherry finish gives it a lick of sweetness.

One of the better values scotch-wise that the LCBO has offered in some time IMHO!!!

Sharp eyes. That's quite a discount for LCBO. Any chance of Cardhu coming down further?

At $200+ the 12yr would have to come down aways - like 85% off - for me to be interested. I tried a bottle a while ago. Not bad, but wasn't memorable for me either.

I am waiting for those last few bottles of Clan Denny Speyside to drop below $50...

Frodo...why wait for the liquor Overlords!

Go camping in NY state. I know a good liquor store in the US that orders in virtually anything I want for prices that are sometimes LOWER than "duty-free"! Go with two people and legally cross 3 x 750 ml. Just got my Uigedail last trip.

I agree about taking advantage of shopping in other countries with less "sin" taxes. Didn't know that NYS has less than we do given that JWB costs about what it does here. If I lived closer to Buffalo I would probably by more...

It seems Bowmore 12 has dropped 5 bucks in price and now $43.75 regular. The $5 off sale to $38.75 seems like a very good deal.

New LCBO Bin-end Sale! 20-25% off an interesting selection - most of which are $100-$250 but there are some interesting ones like...

- Connemara 12yr $100 (down from $125)
- Hart Bros Glenrothes 13yr $89 (down from $116)

The best deal I think is...
- 30yr Famous Grouse @ $140 (down from $180). At $180 I thought it was a good deal. At $140 you can't lose!

Is that the larger format bottle or the regular? In the NSLC I got the Glenfiddich for $50.00 even marked down from $55.99 or something.

That would be the regualar size bottle. NS may have lower prices accross the board for scotch - I know New Brunswick does.

Also, I've just noticed that Cardhu has been marked down to $164 from $200. Quite a large price drop there!

I guess I can be the first to inform you if you didnt read in between the lines of Frodo's posts, Cardhu is worth like 50 bucks. Thats how much it was just 2-3 years ago. They then decided for some strange reason that it is worth $250. After it was just sitting on the shelf for a year they lowered it to $200, and now $164.

Haha, yeah should have read a few posts up in the thread before posting that one about Cardhu. Apparantly it's not such a bad malt either i've heard. Has anyone ever tried it?

I've tried Cardhu several times. In the 90s I bought a bottle for my dad at 46$ from the LCBO. It is nice, but I still would only pay 60$ tops. The Spaniards apparently get it cheap then dump it into Coke. Diageo has allocated much of their production to Spain. The LCBO is just trying to screw us over.

I bought a bottle of Cardhu once about 10yrs ago. Wasn't bad, but wasn't too memorable. Nothing I'd pay over $65 for blind...
