What do we all drink regularly?

Wine, rum, cognac etc.

Bourbon is too cheap and nasty in my humble opinion.

That just leaves Scotch and a bit of Irish as the only refuge.

Beer, first, last, and in between. On this side of the pond, American IPA's, usually. Long Trail IPA has been the staple here at home for some time; Harpoon before that. Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale is a great favorite, an early-winter seasonal that I'll drink for as long as it's available. (Thank god I'm almost out of it now--to be honest, the 6.7%, or whatever it is, is killing me.) When out, an IPA, if available; occasionally a pint of Guinness is just the thing. Will stoop to Sam Adams if necessary, but no lower.

On the other side of the pond, real ale whenever possible (the Good Beer Guide is my most important travel resource), preferably a bitter or similar. Taylor's Landlord and Deuchar's IPA are particular favorites. Will stoop to Best or similar if necessary, or John Smith's. In direst circumstance, there's always Guinness. Never, ever, ever lager. Work of the devil.

Occasionally wine with dinner--prefer New World merlots and sauvignon blancs.

Spirits other than whisky--calvados now and then, and Clear Creek's apple brandy. Have been trying some of their other brandies, too, pear and plum. Keep meaning to try tequila and rum, but haven't got around to it.

Non-alcoholic--mostly water. Don't touch soft drinks. Club soda when out, a bottle of Poland Spring carbonated water at home, or just plain water. GatorAde after gym. Coffee in the morning. And I am a firm believer in the restorative powers of orange juice, on the odd queasy morning. Unfortunately, most of the OJ I've been served in the UK has ranged from fair to awful.

And Pete, you're wrong about bourbon--it took me a long time to warm up to it, but there are some really good ones out there. Maybe not much available in your neighborhood.

Beer, whatever I get hold of but if I can avoid, no Heineken, Carlsberg and such, just bland. We've got a good one in Switzerland called Feldschlösschen, it's the standard regular lager out here you get everywhere (owned by Heineken I gather) but really ok no bullshit lager. Then there are some finer things like the Quöllfrisch (lager from the Appenzell mountains) or the Ittinger (amber stuff from my home turf) which are quite readily available so if I do have the choice, I'll jump to it. Then there's a whole pletora of some obscure real ale trendy fussy craft ales which I don't touch but they should be ok for y'all ale lovers.

Non-alcoholic-wise I go for our crystal clear Valser water (kindly supplied by my office) or plain tap water which is perfectly drinkable in Switzerland. I like my odd coke, but not the pet-bottles, but straight outta the can, for hangover cure (no IRN BRU being available in Switzerland ;(). Otherwise, it'll be double espressos, earl grey or even grapefruit juice to get me started in the morning.

If I'm buying beer in a supermarket I'll nearly always go for Leffe. I can also enjoy a simple can of boddingtons though.

In the pub I'll try whatever real ale is on, if not just whatever bitter. I will drink lager but it's a last resort, used to think I loved it, only because I didn't know any better.

I'm still in a bit of an experimental phase at the moment. Bought a bottle of sailor Jerry from asda (on offer for £15) the other week that has been going down very well.

At the end of the day a nice scotch (usually peated, usually ardbeg) is my drink of choice at home.

The things I drink regularly would be:

If being cheap:
Wine: Lombrusso - they sell it VERY high priced in Olive Garden, then I found it in the grocery for 4x size the bottle at 1/3rd the price at like $7.99. Ridiculous

Beer: Woodchuck or Hornsby Apple Ciders (more alcohol in them than regular beer)

If feeling rich:
Cabo Wabo / Don Julio / Trago - Tequila
Skullhead Vodka - Vodka
Hennessey Black - Cognac

Etc. just the regular higher shelf grades of those you'd find in the local bars.

Beer for me too, I'm trying quite a few things at the mo, ASDA has a 3 for £4 deal at the moment which includes Hobgoblin but this time around I have got a repeat buy of Old Tom and also a never tried before Innis and Gunn Original and a St. Peter's Ruby Red Beer. Hope they're good.

Whiskywise its all about Caol Ila, they're all good save perhaps the 18 and any Indie bottling I've been fortunate enough to try.

Wine: More red than white overall. Unless feeling a bit extravagant, I look for quality at a reasonable price, which means exploring lesser known or up and coming regions. Spain, Portugal, the south of France, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Lebanon, India and, yes, my native Canada are recent hunting grounds. Amongst the more historically established areas, the Rhine and Mosel-Saar-Ruwer of Germany, Bordeaux, Alsace, Rioja, Tuscany as well as the Veneto in Italy, and southeast Australia seem to see the most action.

Beer: Predominantly British bottle-conditioned ales and German Pilsners, with a smattering of others thrown in for variety.

Rum: More during the summer months. I'm partial to most quality rums, though El Dorado 15 Year Old is a solid staple.

Brandy: Principally Spanish Brandy. I particularly enjoy Torres 20 Hors d'Age.

Tequila: An occasional drink for me. 4 Copas Reposado works.

Fortified wine: Madeira, Port and Sherry all occupy a place in my cabinet. Hard to beat something as magical as a Blandy's 1977 Vintage Bual.

Liqueur: Not a big fan, though bottles of Drambuie and Green Chartreuse hang around.

Beer - I haven't considered myself much of a beer drinker but lately I've been enjoying a number of American craft beers. I especially like the big imperial stouts, such as Southern Tier Chokolat, Smuttynose Imperial Stout, and Old Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout. I also like a good IPA, with Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and Southern Tier Unearthly two of my favorites. For imports I like Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal and Imperial Stouts.

Gin - During the summer months I enjoy a martini and the occasional gin and tonic, usually made with Bombay Sapphire or Plymouth London Dry Gin.

Rum - Have not had much experience with Rum but I have a bottle Mount Gay Extra Old Rum on hand that I plan try in the coming weeks.

Cognac - I don't drink much cognac but usually have a couple of bottles on hand. Kelt XO is a favorite.

Wine, more often white than red but this is because I prefer white over red on its own as an aperitif (unless its a lovely light beaujolais), but I prefer to drink red with food.

Sometimes vodka, on the odd occasion tequila, and also armagnac now and again. In the summer I enjoy the occasional liqueur over ice (limoncello out of the freezer is a firm favourite, or perhaps Baileys - I drizzle that stuff over good quality vanilla ice-cream). Oh, and I do enjoy the occasional shot of a good grappa.

Don't know why, but I can't cope with beer of any kind :? .
I must remember to forget....

Now pretty much just wine (usually lower alcohol whites) and whisky for me. Never got real ale, beer or lager. Do like a decent real cider now and then. Plus the occasional Port or Madeira.
