I started reading "Red Tape and White Knuckles" by Lois Pryce. One woman's motorcycle adventure through Africa. She starts in Tunis and finishes in Cape Town. It will be finished soon i think. I'm a big fan of travel writing.

Research Methods in Anthropology. Lord, take me now.

May I suggest The Race for Timbuktu: In Search of Africa's City of Gold by Frank T. Kryza? Very enjoyable book.

Still ploughing through Churchill by Clive Ponting which is a very critical account. Meandering towards June 1940 - when Churchill became PM.

I am also reading "Appreciating Whisky" by Philip Hills having picked it up from the Library. A stunning book on Whisky so far - The introduction alone makes this a very special book. (I am reading this book much quicker than the other one and will probably read it again.)
I feel no pain dear mother now
But oh, I am so dry!
O take me to the distillery
And leave me there to die.

I'm currently reading "999" a horror anthology. Don't really know if anyone is interested in that genre.

However, I was also browsing through this book I picked up during an Achor Steam tour, "Cocktail Boothby's American Bartender". Well it's quite amazing the advice that is given for bartenders and traders of whisky and other spirits. I don't want to give too much away in case any of you want to check out the book. But it lists such secrets of the trade as adding prune juice, blood (perhaps prune puree???), etc. and caramel to increase the appearance of the whisky's age up to 10 years. Also mentions outright deceptive practices as diluting the whisky with the use of other spirits and using creosote. YIKES! That's now regulated by our environmental protection agency. It's mostly a bartending book with drink recipes from before prohibition hit the united states, but I found that bit somewhat interesting.

I read Theodore Boone by John Grisham yesterday. Seems there will be a follow up, isn't it, Mr Grisham? Is this going to be a series?... why not.

Just wondering if you think it's worth the $100 it's being sold for in the US at amazon. I have found a copy at a nearby library in another town. Must be a collector's item!

Can anyone make a cheaper recommendation for a person like myself seeking basic whisky information? Or an online book I can purchase? I have one of those new-fangled iPads now.

Thanks, in advance. ;)

It really depends what you're after.

Charlie McLean's "Malt Whisky"
Michael Jackson's "Whisky"
Jim Murray's ""Complete Book of Whisky"

They're probably in my reverse order of enjoyment but that's due to my style preferences, not necessarily content

I have received a b'day gift from the Mrs of a book called The Villain, The Life Of Don Whillans. I have avoided this book for the last few years as i'd read that the author Jim Perrin didn't actually like Don at all and it showed in the book. I recently decided i'd like to read it as i've been fascinated by this bar-room brawling mountaineer for most of my life.
I've spent a lot of money on whisky and women, the rest i squandered

Currently reading Umberto Eco's "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana". It's ok, not as good as Name of the Rose but better than Travels in Hyperreality or The Island of The Day Before, neither of which I could finish. Before that it was Philip K. Dick's Time out of Joint, quickly preceded by Chandler's The Little Sister. Next up is The Big Sleep, which I'm ashamed to admit I've never read before.

Halfway through "Lord of The Flies." I haven't read this for many ,many years. I really liked "The Inheritors" and the "Rights of Passage" trilogy by Golding, so thought it would be good to go back to where it all started.

"LOTF" is a disturbing book. A look into the darker side of human endurance, through the eyes and exploits of children!

Quite brilliant.
