Right now thur and friday are up in the air with my only plans being to visit Edinburg one of those days. I'm also thinking of visiting Glengoyne before the festival on Sat if anyone wants to come, I have a car so getting there isn't an issue. If the weather is tolerable I might take a trip down to Bladnoch distillery when I arrive on Thur since it's on my list of distilleries I havn't visited yet. Any other recommendations are appreciated, I know the days are short and the weather may not cooperate so there will probably be alot of bar time involved with this trip and that was really the reason for taking it, nothing better than good scotch in Scotland. (oh I may have a couple scottish ales as well)

Although it's a fair distance from Glasgow I'd definately try to make it down to Bladnoch if at all possible. It's a fabulous distillery to visist and I'm sure you'll find it well worth the effort.

My goal is to head that way, the only thing that may stop me is if the weather is just totally miserable, and that still may not, my goal is to visit all the lowland distilleries prior to Sat so we'll see how that works out.

It gave me a wry smile to see that that area is called Theatre District. There isn't really such a place since the theatres are dotted all over what is a fairly small city centre. However, to the point. You are in the west of the City Centre and very very close to the Bon Accord as you have already spotted. It has it's own whisky club and is also spiritual home of Glasgow's Whisky Club (GWC)where the ideas of the festival germinated.
There are a few pubs worth visiting since they have a good whisky selection, Bon Accord, Ben Nevis at 1147 Argyle Street, (Drop into Tam's Drams opposite at 1134 Argyle Street). The Lismore is further along at 206 Dumbarton Road. And it is worth while taking a wander up Byres Road. Ashton Lane is behind the Hillhead Underground and there are some fine bars there. All the way to the top of Byres Road at Great Western Road is Oran Mor. Another good whisky bar.
In the City Centre The Pot Still is at 154 Hope Street. McSorleys at 42 Jamaica Street is very close to the Arches and sells the first whisky from Lewis in over a century Abhainn Dearg (Pron Aavan Jerig? I think)
Each of these bars will likely sell good beer too. Chenasky's is a Bourbon Bar on the same road as Bon Accord just keep going north to the next block near the big pink office building that spans the motorway.

The Horseshoe, State Bar, and The Variety which are good bars too in my view though have less focus on whisky. We do do things that don't involve drinking too but there is not enough space for food places

Try here for some other views on bars http://www.yelp.co.uk/glasgow

So Len I hope that's enough to be going on with and I hope you find some other treasures along the way. Mathew a GWC member can be seen in Oddbins in Mitchell Lane and may have a couple of new releases to recommend. Robert Graham's are across the road and won't make it to the festival.

As for distilleries, (check for those that require booking in advance) Auchentoshan, Glengoyne are the closest to the city within 30-40 minutes max, Deanston and Tullibardine are about 60-75 minutes away. Glenturret, Glenkinchie and Daftmill about 2 hours as are Aberfeldy, Blair Athol and Edradour. Bladnoch is at least 2 1/2 hours on small windy roads and although I cannot recommend Bladnoch highly enough both as a beautiful place to visit and a number one craft distillery, it is a long drive.

Hope you enjoy your stay. I'm not sure of my plans just yet and have a few thirsty whisky drinkers to marshall on the day of the Festival. I'll look out for you either in the Bon Accord or see you there.

Peter

Thanks for all the advice, as far as Bladnoch goes I would really love to go and I know its a trek so really I think I'm going to play it by ear based on weather and if I don't make it then plan on a spring or summer trip where there is a better chance of good weather. 2.5 hrs both ways in rain doesn't sound like all that much fun.

Just checked on the AA route planner and Glasgow City Centre to Wigtown(which is a mile from Bladnoch) is 2 hours 24 mins one way and 93 miles, so yes it's a long trip with no other distilleries nearby, but in my opinion well worth it if you have the time

More like three hours for me. I still can't understand how people can drive so fast on such narrow roads.

Well for anyone going to the festival here is a picture of me a few years ago, I'll be spending my evenings at the pubs starting Thursday so if anyone on the forum recognizes this mug then stop by and we can have a drink.

Tickets at Arches sold out while I was on holiday, gutted, but that's what I get for leaving it so late. If anyone ends up with any spare I'd be delighted to buy them (I'm assuming that there won't be any additional tickets released)?

I'll get an updated exhibitor list up shortly but in essence you get four hours in The Arches with around 40+ exhibitors who will let you try their wares. Just remember to pace yourself, make use of the spittoons (no laughing, Willie) and drink plenty of water (end of responsible drinking bit).
