Birthday whisky - 1965

Postby portwood » 11 Jan 2011, 03:07

Hi all,

I would like to find a quality dram that I can drink each year on my birthday. :yummy:

Criteria:
1. must be a single malt distilled in 1965
2. must be available for purchase at reasonable price (<€400)
3. ideally bottled in 1996, second choice would be 2000
4. should have "1965" printed on the label
5. would prefer >43% abv

Icing on the cake would be if this were available in Canada ;)

Does it have to be a malt? You can get some lovely, old single grains of that vintage and well under your budget. For example Douglas Laing do a few in their Clan Denny range: http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-13538.aspx

Thanks for the great research Len.

I've seen couple of them at the whisky exchange.
So far the most attractrive and probably more easily available seems to be the Glenfarclas family cask (2007 or 2010 release).

More opinions welcome - especially from any Canadians out there.

I've always been a fan of Glenfarclas and their family cask series is fairly affordable for a vintage single cask.

One year later .... Found it!
1. not a single malt, but produced by a single distillery, in 1965 - half point
2. Cdn$400, check
3. bottled 2011, half point for being a current bottling
4. "1965" on label, check
5. cask strength (52.3%), check
6. Icing on the cake, available in Canada, check
and the winner is .... 1965 Lochside - Adelphi (single blend, single barrel, cask strength, 499 bottles)

And, icing, on the icing on the cake ... 91 points on the 2011 Malt Maniacs awards (4th place) :yummy:

This is my biggest single purchase to date - by a factor of two! Could only pull the trigger on one. Need some reserve cash to pay for the cabinet to house it, and its mates. ;)

Excellent choice PortWood, that is indeed a magnificent dram. It has so much happening in there and yes, it was well worthy of all the accolades in MMA 2011.

Take your time with it, savour it, but most of all enjoy it!
