Best wine guide book

Postby Finnegan » 12 May 2011, 11:48

I'm after something quick and accessible to consult whilst online, in the supermarket and specialist retailers, something along the lines of Whisky Bible and am tending towards Hugh Johnson's pocket wine book.
Does anyone have a better suggestion?

I don't know your level of wine knowledge, but nonetheless I would recommend Wine: All-In-One : For Dummies. This has 5 books in one:

1. Wine For Dummies
2.French Wine
3. Italian Wine
4. Californian Wine
5. Aussie & NZ Wine

Great value book and not just for novices. Lots of lighthearted tips and advice from food pairing to ordering at a restaurant. Look on Amazon for a preview

There are so many excellent books on wine that I find it extremely difficult to compose an effective short list. Furthermore, books on wine tend to have the nasty habit of going out of date relatively quickly. The wine world is, after all, changing so rapidly these days.

That said, Michael Broadbent's Pocket Guide to Wine Tasting packs a great deal of worthwhile information into a small and easily browsed format.

In lieu of book recommendations, however, might I instead recommend a subscription to Decanter Magazine? This way, you'll remain abreast of the most up-to-date information, and experience the added benefit of regularly reading articles penned by some of the best wine writers around.

I recommend Wine Spectator magazine - they have an excellent mobile app. Has the full scores/datatbase, vintage charts, personal wine list, etc. Really good & easy to use although not a cheap subscription. But, it is updated constantly - something a book can't do.
Don't become a fanboy.....always question, stay skeptical & follow the money.

Purchase single copies of Wine Spectator and Decanter, if you must, and then cross-compare them so as to ascertain which better suits your own penchant and purposes.

I'll say no more on this matter, except to mention that Decanter Magazine is my personal preference of the two.
