Cornwall single malt

A 7yo Cornish whisky just was released with a price tag matching that of the new Abhainn Dearg. Anyone heard of this one before?

I remember reading about it many years ago, so it's here at last. I knew it was just several hundred litres a year, at least early on.

I had a tour around the Cornish Cyder Farm in 2008 and was delighted to hear that they were working on producing their own whisky. Three years on it's good to see they've released it, but contrary to what I thought at the time I certainly won't be buying any at that price - even if it does come with two glasses

Why isn't a distillery attached to a cider farm producing apple brandy? Or are they?

Yes, they do produce apple brandy - although I think they release them solely as vintages in very limited amounts, so much so that bottles are only available to buy on the farm.

If not here than at the othe place.

And they could probably answer the question if somebody is maturing whisky in ex-cider casks.

Cornish whiskey inaugural release now available, but close already to selling out. Limited to just 319 bottles, bottle #1 of which is being auctioned on E-Bay for charity (already at £770!).

There will seemingly be no more whisky until 2014, when a more 'general release' type bottling will be offered.

Over £2,000 for good causes from the auction of bottle #1. Brilliant. E-Bay charity auctions really seen to bring out the best in bidders. Fabulous.

Seemingly, Jim Murray (briefly pauses to bow in respect) rated the Cornish distillate highly. It'll be intriguing to see what the 10yo is like in 2014. Cheaper, hopefully lol.

St Austell Brewery has now sold its allocation of half the bottles.

Not sure whether Cornish Cyder Farm has any of its allocation left. If it does, they're probably all 'spoken for'.

I can't see the problem with high prices for the first releases from a distillery. It's a one off and the distillery can't repeat the trick. In time, prices will normalize and in particular, English distilleries will find themselves at a disadvantage to their Scottish counterparts because they might sell a few bottles as novelties but regular drinkers are more likely to gravitate towards Scotland. I hope that, in tome, people will start to see that good showings don't have to come from Scotland and, of course, that Cornish whisky is part of the solution and not part of the problem.

I agree with that. Scotland has enough distilleries anyway. There's great whisky all over the world.
