Have you looked at tastings.com. Whyte and Mackay whiskies dominate the highest rated scotch whiskies.

I had a quick look at tastings.com and I've never seen a whisky scored 99 points before.

Signatory haven't sent him whiskies for years. I understand Cadenhead's didn't send him anything either this year and I think I heard mention of another IB that didn't, but I can't remember which one.

Personally I don't understand why they don't. It seems to me they are likely to get some good scores and some not so good. It's all publicity either way.

Perhaps they simply don't care to participate. Good for them.

yes.

but i assume this publication, coming out every year as it does, makes money? if so, why is it that the publishers don't subsidize purchases of (at least some) whiskies that are not provided as free samples? this is meant to be a comprehensive survey, right? i mean, the people who put the old and new testament together didn't restrict themselves only to the religious views of people who sent in samples.

Nowadays, The Whisky Bible is self published. JM would effectively be buying his own drams. I think it is reasonably common in the whisky world that once someone has cut their teeth as a whisky writer, they tend not to expect to pay for new whiskies - only for their daily drams if they have time for such things. Similarly in the wine world, many producers either drink their own stuff or do swapsies, but don't expect to part with money for wine.

The Whisky Bible depends on its comprehensiveness for its success. If major producers stop sending samples, the concept will break down. The question is which would suffer first - the Whisky Bible or the major brand. In the case of IBs that bottle single casks, the Whisky Bible is probably of limited interest. Most bottlings would have sold out long before they had been evaluated and included in the publication. And even if they hadn't and they scored well, there would still only be a few bottles of the successful whiskies to sell - not the many thousands of Ardbeg 10 or Old Pulteney 21.

On a cursory glance, here is Jim Murray's stock ticker for 2012, if you care:
- Highland Park 12 has nosedived since 2011, which sort of aligns with what I suspected
- Glenfiddich 12 is surprisingly buoyant
- Macallan Fine Oak 12 hits new heights
- Glenfarclas 15 has tripped and fallen a long way
- Ardbeg Alligator is looking snappy, but Ardbeg Feis Ile is close to pure horse urine
- Talisker 10, Ardbeg 10 have been retasted and found exactly the same
- Rittenhouse 100 stumbles a little
- Laphroaig 10 (40abv) gets tasted at last with top results
- Laph QuarterCask is now one of the best liquors on earth

Take that with spoonefuls of salt, y'all

...and having a good orange and a bad apple together is better than just having the good orange :-D

That was not a skit by the way........am I the only one with a proper Whisky Bible 2012?? Several eyebrow raising retastings this year (and some comments on the Arab Spring and the English Riots that I thought seemed somewhat tasteless).

I just found out that my copy was signed.......maybe the liquor store didn't remember cos I didn't pay a premium. Imagine, a copy of the Bible that was handled by the Author Himself! Hallelujah! :-D
